Christopher Hooton - 17th March, 2011
..Michael Gough, Alfred the butler in Batman, dies aged 94

Actor Michael Gough, famous for his role in Tim Burton's Batman films, passed away today at the age of 94. .

The British actor is probably best known for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the Burton/Schumacher Batman franchise, the most critically acclaimed run of Batman films prior to Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

Gough made his film debut back in 1947 in Blanche Fury and went on to appear in early episodes of Doctor Who as 'The Celestial Toymaker'.

He achieved cult status in horror fan circles for his roles in the Hammer horror films of the 1960s, featuring in Dracula, The Phantom of the Opera and Anglo-Amalgamated's Horrors of the Black Museum.

After the Batman films, Gough maintained contact with director Tim Burton, working on films such as Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and Alice In Wonderland.

The Batman series has received a lot of attention recently after the confirmation of new film The Dark Knight Rises.
.Christopher Nolan has insisted that it will be the last Batman film under his charge and Christian Bale has said that he will relinquish the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman after this third film in the trilogy.

Tom Hardy will play villain Bane in the film, while Anne Hathaway will take the role of Selina Kyle in the comic book adaptation.

I'm very sentimental about Alfred-related things. This makes me sad.

A few days ago I was watching the Shadows of the Bat documentary about the Burton/Schumaker series and whenever he was on the screen I was glad that he was still with us.

The only consistent thing about the '90s Bat-movies was Gough.

He was around for a very long time, including some early Hammer horror films. IIRC. He had a good run.

When he was 50, he married the 21-year-old Anneke Wills, who would go on to play the uber-hot dolly girl Polly on Doctor Who. They were married for 17 years.

I remember him most as Alfred, but I have a few of the Hammer Films he was in as well. He did indeed have a good career.

No, it's not true. The Celestial Toymaker can never die.

I wonder what his reaction to the Bat-nipples were.

"So, we're doing this now. I guess if this is what kids think it cool, okay, but I don't get it."

Very depressing news. Loved him in everything I saw him in, from The Horror of Dracula and Phantom of the Opera for Hammer all the way through the Batman films and Sleepy Hollow for Tim Burton.

Great, great talent.

Amen!!! He was GREAT. Loving yet supportive, like my version of Alfred would be. RIP.

I feel embarrassed to say I thought he was already dead.

Although Christopher Nolan's two Batman movies are better than Tim Burton's
1989 film, Gough did a pretty good job as Alfred.

I also remember seeing Gough---albeit younger and unrecognizable---in a Hammer
horror movie. Anybody else here see Dr. Terror's House of Horrors?

Can your DVD play region 2 DVDs or the PAL format? If so, here's the AmazWAN link:

If not, I'm afraid it's unavailable for Region 1 DVDs. :sigh:
