Film vs. Film Challenge: Round 2, Match 8

Apocalypse Now vs. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Francis Ford Coppola took viewers to the edge of madness in Apocalypse Now, a druggy, hazy portrait of a world gone mad, an intense, harrowing journey with a clear, distinct directorial vision. Sergio Leone’s visionary film, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, is considered one of the finest example of the western genre, a film that influenced the look and feel of genre films for years to come, while remaining hugely popular with fans.

I choose Clint, since ANow is a bloated pile of dog doo. (decent enough movie, just not "Great").

Apocalypse Now, because I don't care for westerns, and I love AN.

I think the Emperor has no clothes with Apocalypse Now. May be one of the most overrated movies of all time.

As noted earlier, not only is The Good, The Bad & The Ugly not my favorite Leone film, it's not even my favorite of the "Man With No Name" trilogy. (That honor goes to For A Few Dollars More.)

It's great, yes, but others hold it in much higher esteem than I do. Once I saw Once Upon A Time In The West, GB&U seemed like a warmup to me. LOVE Eastwood, LOVE Lee Van Cleef, LOVE Eli Wallach, and am eager to see this again -- but I think I have to go with Apocalypse Now.

While I'm not eager to see AN again, I "felt" it a lot more. It left me vaguely uneasy and somewhat disturbed. After watching it, I felt like I had gone on a dirty, ugly journey, losing a piece of myself in the process. Any film that can leave you reeling like that is hard to forget.

Plus, Coppola's gorgeous cinematography, manic editing, hazy images and dreamlike, druggy take on Heart of Darkness was quite impressive, especially in light of the shit conditions he worked in.

I like them both (love neither), but Apocalypse Now is a more impressive directorial feat to me.

I havent seen either in a while, but if I have to choose between them, it would be GBU no question.

I'm one of those who holds it in higher esteem. Not only do I think it's the best of the Man With No Name Trilogy, but I also think it's better than Once Upon a Time in the West.

Hey, I love both movies, and you're not the only one who argues that OUTW is better. OUTW has some brilliant visuals in it - and some unquestionably surpass anything in GBU. Persoanlly, though, I think that GBU has a meatier story, with less padding. It also has Clint, and while Bronson's good, he's just no Eastwood.

That's just my humble opinion.

Easy choice for me. It's one of my favorite westerns. I also love Clint.

GB&U.

Morricone over Morrisson.

This one's close, as both are two of my favorite movies ever, but I'll have to vote for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Best western I've ever seen VS the third best Copolla film I've seen.
