'Star Wars' set for 3D release in 2012
The Star Wars series is to be released in 3D from 2012, it has been revealed.
The six films will reportedly be converted into 3D and released to cinemas in narrative order, beginning with 1999's The Phantom Menace and concluding with 1983's Return of the Jedi.
Although The Phantom Menace 3D is scheduled to hit theatres in 2012, subsequent release dates are yet to be established, since each movie takes at least a year to be converted from 2D to 3D, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale said: "The process is really extensive, and we want to make sure each of the films gets the attention it needs, so we're not ready to talk about the release patterns of the other films."
Creator George Lucas, who will personally oversee the conversions, previously admitted that the success of Avatar had encouraged him to press ahead with the project, which was originally announced in 2008.

'Phantom Menace 3D' gets release date
Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox have announced a released date for the 3D theatrical opening of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
The 3D version of the first Star Wars prequel will arrive in cinemas on February 10, 2012.
George Lucas previously announced that he plans to convert all six Star Wars films to 3D and re-release them in theatres in the epic story's chronological order.
The Phantom Menace was originally released in cinemas in 1999 and grossed more than $924 million at the worldwide box office.

I wonder how much work goes into making a 3D movie out of something that wasn't shot in 3D to begin with. One might think it would be easier to just re-shoot the film in 3D. Without Jar Jar, of course.

Or any of the original actors--just virtual simulacra. From what I've read of George Lucas, he'd probably be more comfortable directing those.

I'm down on the remake thing in general, but Phantom Menace is one movie that should be re-done. By a good director and with a revised storyline. Lucas should just do like he did on The Empire Strikes Back and be a more-or-less glorified consultant. He had the least involvement with that movie and it is considered by many to be the best film of the series.

Clones should also be redone, to correct the awful, awful acting, particularly Hayden. Portman sucked too, which is very unlike her, so I blame Lucas for the performances too, more so than the actors.

A couple of days ago I was watching the extras in Back to the Future and Spielberg was comparing the second BTTF to Empire and said it was his favorite Star Wars movie. Not even Lucas friends prefers the Lucas-made ones.
There were good ideas in the prequels, all of them could have been good movies if Lucas had given his story ideas to good writers and directors.

Hell, Attack of the Clones would have been good if he'd just brought in a great screenwriter to do a final draft, so the dialogue would be vaguely human enough for the actors to actually connect with.

I'd love to blame Lucas, but the sad fact is that without some sort of "gimmick" like this, nobody will go to the theatres to watch the original films when they can see them on DVD. That's why Disney stopped re-releasing their old animated classic films. I think Lucas is bound and determined to reclaim the distinction of having the #1 box-office champion of all time which Titanic and Avatar took away from him.

Hell, I don't care, I loved the "Star Wars" prequels. They're as much a part of my adulthood as the original trilogy was to my childhood. As far as I'm concerned, Jar Jar rules, and Greedo shot first.

If Star Wars (as it was in 1977) was released to the big screen again I would go see it again, probably dragging friends along to see it. Maybe multiple times. I'm not going near a 3-D re-release.

So would I. Unfortunately, the studios have found that most people won't go to see a movie in the theatres if they can just watch the DVD. That's why Warners never re-released Superman in the theatres and Disney stopped re-releasing animated classics after Pinocchio bombed. (That movie came out on VHS a decade before.)

Superman was given a limited re-release in 1998 to select markets. It was initially rumored that like Star Wars, it was going to have new SFX and CGI, but it didn't happen.

I'd go see the original movies just to see them in the theatre... didn't care about Star Wars when they came out in theatres in the late 90's.
I think theatres should have a "retro night" on their least busy night of the week and devote one of the theatres to playing a classic film. I'd love to see Rocky, Superman, Radiers of the Lost Ark and many more that I never got to see in the theatre.

Many theaters actually do that. In the past 5 years I've seen Back to the Future, Young Frankenstein, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Star Trek II that way.
