Our wacky upstairs neighbors have declared this coming weekend will be in honor of Gilligan's Island. I posted this up there, but thought some of y'all might get a kick out of it too.

So who decided the place would be named after Gilligan? If the Skipper was the boss, why didn't he name it Grunby's Island? Or, the Howells being as rich as they were, why didn't they declare it Howell's Island? How did our friend Willie get the honor?

Page sued over this recording. Pretty sad. They also did one called Kennedy Girls to the tune of Neil Young's Cinnamon girl ( "I wanna live with a Kennedy girl, plenty of money the rest of my life with a Kennedy girl..."). From what I heard at the time, apparantly Neil had a much better sense of humor then Page........ I friend of mine had both original 45's. I fortunately have tape copies of them.

The song, originally known as "Gilligan's Island (Stairway)," created a minor sensation when it first appeared in 1977, and was primed to become a big novelty hit until Zep's legal team intervened.

After years of unsuccessfully trying to track down the 45, Polygram did me a huge favor when they somehow got permission to include "Stairway to Gilligan's Island" on a CD titled Laguna Tunes, a collection of tracks that Kenny Laguna produced, wrote or played on. (Laguna is best known as Joan Jett's manager/producer.) The CD went OOP almost immediately, but can still be found for a reasonable price on Amazon and eBay.
