This is great. I love Terry Kath's playing, and I didn't realize he sang those hits too. Thanks for posting it.

This was fun to watch, despite a lot of missed notes by Lee, the trumpet player.

I always love hearing the original line-up, though, and the rhythm section sounds fantastic as always. It's funny, but even though the horns are the identity of the band, it's the non-horn players (Terry, Robert, Peter, and Danny) that I could listen to playing all day.

That's a good point, and I realized I agree. The horn section is what made them distinctive in the early days (along with BS&T and a few others), but that core was a really special group of musicians. I appreciate these guys more than ever now. The range of styles was phenomenal -- pop, rock, jazz, avant garde, even country rock -- and they could do it all at the highest level. And write a long series of very catchy hits to boot.

I wish they would release their 70's TV special on DVD.

Me too. They may have even had more than one special in the 70's. The one I remember was called Meanwhile Back At The Ranch, as in the Caribou Ranch in Colorado where they did a lot of their recording.

It was always a treat when music programming slipped through on one of the three major networks in those pre-cable days.

Several comments:

1.) WOW!
2.) Terry Kath would have turned 65 this year. What might have been...
3.) The original band was a force of nature, and this is a terrific document of that.
4.) Chicago still plays the Ballet very convincingly at most non-casino shows. It's one of the few glimpses you can still get of how awesome this band was. (The problem is that you look around and see how bored most of the audience is while they're waiting for "If You Leave Me Now" or "You're The Inspiration". Talk about missing the forest for the trees!)
5.) During "Colour My World", I couldn't tell who was playing the arpeggios. It looked like Robert was just playing chords. I wonder if Jimmy was on a piano off-camera. Maybe it was Terry on guitar -- he certainly had the ability.

Kath was an amazing musician, the drummer is also one of the best I have heard.

BTW, I'm proud to be a long-time Citizens for Boysenberry Jam Fan, too. I have long prefered boysenberry more than any ordinary jam.

I googled this performance. Apparently there is a DVD, but I haven't found a seller who has it.

I looked around and found several sites offering this for sale. Google "Chicago Concert Tanglewood 1970" and see what pops up. I looked at several of those sites, and it appears the DVD is the 40+ minute concert I linked above from YouTube.

The video and audio quality of the 40+ min clip is much better than the 3 single clips above, the songs are:

Stumbled across what looks to be the full 93 minute concert, from Wolfgangsvault, broken up into 12 separate clips. The sound is a little crisper, the video a little cleaner without the running clock, from a similar angle but different camera that tends to wander at times. Totally fab:
