No real shock here as The Doors remasters from the "Perception" box are on their way apparantley in 2 forms ala The Cure remasters. I couldn't plunk down the box price so this is good for me as I'll just get the single Cds. I guess I'm a tad surprised but not totally.
Makes me angry they still haven't issued the original Sabbath remasters from the "Black Box" set

This was an email from my friend at Rhino from today (I believe he listed the list prices and not cost)...

The doors and plant remasters are both coming and it appears in 2 formats. 1 is listed as $12 and one as $24, I think it is the same thing they did with the Cure as single and double releases.

Yes this sounds good. i couldn't afford the box either and when i think about it I only wanted a couple of albums.

Do I read that correctly that the Robert Plant remasters will also be available in 2-CD editions? If so, don't tell me these will have more bonus tracks than the box set!

the doors are a joke as far as i am concerned, and should really, really be ashamed of how they have fleeced and fleeced their fans again and again and again.

they had 6, count 'em 6, studio albums, and i'm pretty sure not one was over 40 minutes long.

densmore, kreiger and manzarak have milked this cash cow for way too long, will it ever end?

But...didn't I read that the stereo CD mastering on the Doors Perception box is the SAME as the last remastering? So wouldn't they be re-releasing the same stuff again (on the single CD versions, anyway)?

Thats true. If you have the previous Doors box set in stereo CD, then you really don't need to re-buy these.

This new one is a must for people with Surround sound capability though or Doors completest's.

What about the bonus tracks?

Aside from the surround-sound capability, a prime reason to buy these are for the hefty amount of bonus material delivered in "primo" sound on each of the CD albums.

On a a recent radio interview with Robby Krieger, it was pointed out that there is some surround sound capability presented on the stereo versions that is not asvailable on any prior remasters before.
I'm not up on the exact details of this... but it was a fascinating explanation given by Krieger.

These are not the same CD's. The stereo CD's that came in the Perception box set are the 1999 remasters. The CD's that came out this week are the 40th Anniversary Mixes. They've gone back and completely remixed the catalog. These sound dramatically different for better or worse.

The first album was been speed corrected as it had been mastered a 1/2 beat slow for 40 years (only the album, not the 45's). Other examples of changes are an extra keyboard part in Soul Kitchen, longer fadeouts for Love Her Madly and Hello I Love You, and a whole extra verse in Cars Hiss By My Window. There's even an extra 40 seconds of dialogue in the opening of The Soft Parade. The My Country 'Tis A Thee intro to LA Woman that first appeared on the 5.1 DVD-A mix appears, and much more. There are different instruments and vocals mixed in that were not on the original mixes. History has been changed in a major way here. It's very interesting to hear for sure.

The one thing I don't understand is why the 40th Anniversary Mixes weren't offered in the Perception box, rather we got the 1999 remasters on the stereo CD's again.

I purchased "Morrison Hotel" and "L.A. Woman" last saturday.
I can live without the longer "Cars Hiss By My Window" and the extended intro on "L.A. Woman": they are nice alternate mixes, but it's too bad they become the official ones from now on. My biggest mistake was to get rid of the 1999 remasters after I learned about the new ones coming out.

The aforementioned songs rank among my favorites form the latter period along with Roadhouse Blues, another "enhanced" one: therefore, I wish they'd stayed untouched.
It's like George Lucas releasing "enhanced" versions of the first Star Wars trilogy on dvd....except that
- I didn't really care about Star Wars
- after all, the new Doors sounds were really created 40 years ago.

All in all, highly recommended.

Are you saying that these new single CDs are different from both the older cube box set and the CD discs on the very recent Perception box set? Are the new mixes essentially stereo versions of the surround mixes on the DVD discs in the Perception box? The whole thing is very annoying. I have the Perception box, but I don't have room for a 5.1 speaker set-up.

Sounds like it. Looks like they remixed the albums. The Perception box set has the versions we've all come to love over the years.

This new set changes things like intro's etc.

I THINK I read that the box set had remastered cd's & remixed dvd's. I THINK I read that the standalone releases will be the new remix on cd only. However, if they're also releasing 2 disc versions......????

As of now, Amazon is only listing 1 cd editions.

As I posted earlier, I had a chance to compare several of the remastered cd's (remastered NOT remixed) from the new box to the 1998 remasters. The first album sounded identical to me, the 1998 L.A. Woman was significanttly superior to the new one, The new Waiting For The Sun was Slightly better then the 1998, & the new Strange Days was significantly better then the 1998.

I acknowledge that the last paragraph doesn't make sense, but it's what I heard.

I have not heard the dvd's. I have heard a rip of some of the dvd-a material which was very bright, but as it was a rip, I hesitate to make a judgement.

Just the single-disc remixed studio albums, with bonus tracks.

All six of them are already being sold at Costco for $8.99 each.

All are in jewel cases, and the graphics look great on the front and rear covers.

However... these are "revisionist" remixed studio recordings... NOT the original recordings.
Seek out the 1999 Bernie Grundman remasters first or the Doors Studio Recordings boxset (which is available for a cheap price at YourMusic.com).
IMO, the only reason to obtain these new remixed remasters is for the inclusion of the previously unreleased bonus tracks.
(If one already owns the Doors' Perception boxset, one won't need any of these new remixed remasters. The unreleased bonus tracks are there.)

Word and continued online discussion thus far says that the remixes are hit and miss... some tracks sound great, and some sound totally different.

That's my feeling as well. Overall, the soundstage is much broader, and some of the songs have never sounded better. You can hear all sorts of new things in the mix, instruments, vocals, etc. Other tracks I prefer the old mix as they've mixed down parts that I like. It's definately a shock when you're used to hearing things one way after all these years.

Its definitely worth having this out there. New ways of hearing classic groups are fine with me. But its also important to have access to the original versions too.

People new to the Doors may miss that boat.

Not to worry, the next batch of reissues with go back to the original mixes... (I wish I had my tongue in cheek, but with the record companies, one can only roll their eyes.)

I never even noticed my friend said that there would be 2 CD versions. Perhaps there was a plan at some point to do so-Rhino change their schedule constantly.
I always assumed the Doors and Plant would be single CDs and I never even read what my friend said closely!
I'll talk to him on Monday and see if I can find out what he meant by the different pricing.

Just listened to The Doors (debut): curiously, the "Indian Summer" bonus track sounds very similar to the official album (MH) track.

It's the same music w/ a new vocal recorded during the MH sessions, which I prefer. BTW, the MH remix is my favorite by far and is the definitive version of the album IMHO. Strange Days is also very impressive. I'm still getting used to the other albums with LA Woman and the debut being my least favorite of the new mixes.
