My heart just sank. I am gutted.
This is from slipkid's link:
The renowned rock guitarist Gary Moore has died in a hotel room in Spain.
Mr Moore, 58, was originally from Belfast and was a former member of the legendary Irish group Thin Lizzy.
Adam Parsons, who manages Thin Lizzy, told the BBC that Mr Moore had died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Mr Moore was originally drafted into Thin Lizzy by its singer Phil Lynott. He later gained acclaim for his solo work and was a former member of the Irish group Skid Row.
The Northern Ireland guitarist was only 16 when he moved from Belfast to Dublin in 1969, to join Skid Row, which featured Lynott as lead vocalist.
He was later brought into Thin Lizzy by Lynott to replace the departing Eric Bell, another guitarist from Northern Ireland.
Mr Bell told the BBC on Sunday he was still "in shock" at Mr Moore's death.
"I still can't believe it," he said.
"He was so robust, he wasn't a rock casualty, he was a healthy guy.
"He was a superb player and a dedicated musician."
Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy said it been a pleasure to share a stage with Mr Moore.
"Playing with Gary during the Black Rose era was a great experience, he was a great player and a great guy," he said.
"I will miss him."
Niall Stokes, the editor of the Irish music magazine, Hot Press, described Mr Moore as a "genius".
The lead guitarist received critical acclaim for his work on the 1974 Thin Lizzy album, Nightlife, but would never be constrained by the music group format.
A year earlier, he had released his first solo album Grinding Stone and his virtuoso playing was to make him a recognised artist in his own right.
Although returning to Thin Lizzy briefly in the late 1970s, his solo work cotinued to garner interest and he also enjoyed UK chart success with Lynott, via singles Parisienne Walkways and Out In The Fields.
Throughout his career, Gary Moore was to embrace a range of genres including blues, metal and hard rock.
He performed on stage with a range of major artists and released 20 studio albums.

It's one thing when you can kind of see something like this coming, hearing about health problems or something, but this....it's so unexpected/shocking. I know my guitar heroes are all getting up in age (as are we all) but never in a million years would I have guessed Gary was going to be the next one to go. He wasn't even 60 yet! Sigh.

.....and, of course, all those companies(Virgin Video, Warner Music Video etc.) that have been sitting on Gary's back catalogue video programs will finally release them on DVD. Too bad it required Gary's death to make it happen.

Gutted to hear this, he was one of the musicians who inspired me to go out and buy a guitar. So glad I got to see Gary play live in late 2009.

Way too young. I never got to see him live, but "Corridors Of Power" and "Victims Of The Future" got heavy play from me. Some of the live albums have some audience bits I could do without, but the playing...oh, the playing. I was impressed with the tribute to Phil he did - I honestly didn't have overly high hopes for it, but I thought it was pulled off with class.
And yeah, I'm sure all the stuff the labels have sat on for years under the guise of "there's no market for it" will suddenly find a reason to let the releases flow.
Thanks to the folks on here who pointed out the two-disc UK best of a few months back - now I'm really glad I picked it up.

Sadly, he was so underrated that reading it here is the first I've heard of it and I am shocked and bummed. Gary Moore actually turned me onto the blues even though he came to it later in his career. I have his official website bookmarked and I usually check it daily to see if he is coming out with a new album. Just checked it and it just has a sad announcement of his death, almost like a gravestone. The SB halftime show may have sucked, but heaven has got it goin' on right now with Gary, Jimi and SRV.

Was always more a fan of his rock work than his blues releases, but he was always a major talent. Playing "The Messiah Will Come Again" as I type this.

Talk about deep shock. Gary was born a few days (12) before me in 1952.
I first came to him with Still Got the Blues and have been a major fan ever since.
His was the closet to my own playing style.- turned up and lettin' it rip....
Very sad I never had the chance to see him live.....I emailed his manager a few years back asking for him to come to the States, but never had a reply.
I still can't get enough of his playing.....
R.I.P. Gary. You will be truly missed but always fondly remembered and listened to....

Am listening to his version of Parisienne Walkways on the Live Monsters of Rock CD right now....incendiary! Just wailing....I love that descending "crying" riff he does on that song. The whole solo sounds like the guitar is weeping. Beautiful.

WOW! Shocking news! One of the best guitarists out there, period.
I am very lucky to have many CDs, both solo and group related with his definitive style stamp right on those recordings.
I will compile a listening nite for him this weekend as my tribute to him.
Thanks for the memories Gary and May God Bless you!.

Messages from Greg Lake
I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Gary Moore. Gary was not only a fellow musician but also a soul mate; ever since he played in my solo band we developed a special bond and I will miss him dearly.
May he rest in peace.
Greg Lake.

Sadly, it's looking like it was too easily avoidable, although these are early, unconfirmed reports. http://www.eddietrunk.com/index.cfm/pk/ ... pid/40051207-Feb-11 British Paper Reports That Gary Moore Died From Asphyxiation Submitted by: Dana
Britain's The Sun reports:
Guitarist ace Gary Moore died on holiday choking on his vomit after knocking back champagne and brandy.
The 58-year-old ex-Thin Lizzy star was discovered just before 4am by his girlfriend, unconscious in their Spanish hotel room.
Medics found him lying lifeless on his back wearing just his underpants.
An ambulance source said: "We believe the deceased had been drinking heavily."
A source at The Kempinski hotel on Spain's Costa del Sol - where suites cost up to £3,500 a night - said: "There were definite signs of alcohol in the room.
"His girlfriend was very distraught, in floods of tears."
Moore, rated as one of the finest guitarists of his generation, was best known for his time in Thin Lizzy. He played on their chart hits "Waiting For An Alibi" and "Do Anything You Want To."
He also teamed up with Thin Lizzy frontman and fellow Irishman Phil Lynott for the top ten solo hits "Parisienne Walkways" and "Out In The Fields."
In recent years the Belfast-born guitarist and singer had forged a new career as a blues musician, releasing critically-acclaimed albums and performing with legends BB King and Bob Dylan.
Bob Geldof yesterday described Moore as one of Ireland's musical legends. He said: "One of the greatest blues players of all time. Van Morrison, Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore - the glorious trinity of the Irish blues men."
Moore's shocked former bandmates also paid tribute. Eric Bell, another ex-Lizzy guitarist from Belfast, said: "I can't believe it. He was so robust, he wasn't a rock casualty, he was a healthy guy. He was a superb player and a dedicated musician."
The band's drummer Brian Downey added: "I am in total shock. I've known Gary since 1967 and he's been an amazing friend ever since. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers."
Thin Lizzy's management said: "Our thoughts go out to Gary's family at this time. Our memories of Gary and his contribution to Thin Lizzy and music in general will live on forever."
Moore died hours after checking into the Kempinski Hotel at Estepona with his girlfriend, who is in her 30s, for a six-day holiday.
The hotel source said: "They were going to eat at the restaurant but it was closed so they had a sandwich at the bar with a bottle of champagne. They went for a stroll then back to the bar where Gary had brandies. He seemed fine when he left around 11pm."
Moore was in Thin Lizzy in the late '70s when the band was notorious for alcohol and drug binges.
In 1986 Lynott, who had known Moore since they were teenagers, died of pneumonia brought on by his heroin addiction. He was 36.

Supposedly that source is a British gossip type rag that could be sensationalized. Could be true but...I like this account better (from Hoffman forum)...I guess more news will come out over time. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/ ... 76596.htmlGary Moore, Thin Lizzy guitar legend, died from suspected heart attack Former Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore died from a suspected heart attack, an initial post-mortem examination has found. Forensic experts told a court in Spain's Costa del Sol that the Ulster rocker died of natural causes, hours after starting a six-day holiday with a girlfriend. Last night it emerged his funeral is likely to be held in Brighton, where the 58-year-old had been living, rather than his home city of Belfast. Moore was found dead in a hotel room during the early hours of Sunday morning. Although he had a successful solo career it was for his time in Thin Lizzy that Moore will be best remembered. Yesterday, as tributes continued to pour in for the legendary guitarist, former Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof hailed him as “one of the greats”. “His playing was exceptional and beautiful. We won't see his like again,” he said. Paramedics were called around 4am on Sunday to the five-star Kempinski Resort Hotel in Estepona after Moore's girlfriend raised the alarm. While forensic experts are satisfied he died from natural causes, they requested further tests on tissue samples taken from his body ahead of a final report. A Spanish police spokesman said last night: “Mr Moore died of natural causes and his death is not in any way suspicious. “An investigating magistrate has opened a standard inquiry to determine the exact cause of death.” It is understood a judge has already given permission for Moore's brother Glen, who arrived in Spain yesterday, to repatriate his body. ... Cool - I guess the vault re-releases will be close behind.
I saw the heart attack story today - while it's a little more palatable than something senseless, in the end, he's still not here.

I hope they don't compress these to death as they have been doing with other GM live releases. Looks like a great set list.
