A purely tasteless, moronic, guilty pleasure. Director HaroldRamis employs a mixture of Mad magazine/National Lampoon maturity and Saturday Night Live sarcasm in this goofball golf comedy set on the grounds of a posh country club. Somewhere buried in the slapstick antics, drug references, Marx Brothers-like insults, and gratuitous sex scenes are the intertwined, forgettable subplots of a poor caddie (Michael O'Keefe) trying to earn enough cash to attend college, and golf-tournament and class battles between rich and even richer snobs. Mainly, Ramis just lets his colorful group of eccentrics crash into each other, relying on several inspired performances to create several hilarious moments of sketch comedy. Most come from the trio of Bill Murray (playing a vile, obsessed groundskeeper engaged in a one-man war with a charismatic and very stuffed gopher), Rodney Dangerfield (basically re-creating his crude standup routine), and Chevy Chase (who looks bemusedly stoned throughout). Quotable favorites include Murray's acted-out fantasy of winning the Masters, his tall tale about caddying for the Dalai Lama, an overreaching priest's rain-soaked golf game, Dangerfield's verbal assault on the club's uptight dining patrons, and Chase's lesson on the essence of golf ("Be the ball, Danny"). A perfect double feature with other comparably crass films such as National Lampoon's Vacation or Stripes. --Dave McCoy

If that's the doc that they aired on NBC, it's worth the price. Great stories from Ramis and others about the production of the movie.

I could swear that in the past, when this ran on network tv, there were some scenes that were added to lengthen the movie, since other scenes were cut for content. Am I out of my mind, or was this indeed the case? (Even if it is the case, I may be out of my mind as well!)

Now why didn't I think to look at IMDB? lol Thanks for finding that stuff Calijawn. They should include those as bonus scenes on any new reissue. They don't need to incorporate them into the original film itself, but it would be nice to have them in some form.

I remember seeing the ending on TV with the "we're all gonna take a shower" redubbed line. Okay, I can understand them at that time not allowing the "we're gonna get laid" line, but surely they could have come up with a better line!

A TV network edits a classic, and you want a GOOD line?

One of the worst post-production dubs was when The Blues Brothers first aired on network TV. It was not long after Belushi died and they overdubbed the line "jive-ass preacher" with something tame (I forget what it was) and it was clearly not Belushi speaking the line. The voice actor sounded drunk, almost slurring the delivery.

One TV broadcast of Blazing Saddles edited the name of Madeline Kahn's character to "Lili Von Shtuh"--no final 'p' sound aloud! Made little sense unless you know some Yiddish.

And I believe the campfire farting scene was taken out completely on TV, as well.

An old family friend -- the woman who is (was?) good friends with John Byrne's ex-wife and who invited me to the Byrne Halloween party in '87 -- is part of Rodney Dangerfield's entourage in Caddyshack. Most of the scenes she was visible in were cut, but she's in the crowd at the end when Dangerfield yells, "Hey, everybody! We're all gonna get laid!"

when i buy the movie i want to see the theatrical version (or an extended/directors cut).
don't even bother giving me the sanitized one - even as a bonus feature.

Whenever the Goonies was shown on TV and one of the kids cursed, it sounded like a drunk Asian guy saying "OHSHOOT!"

In the TV version of Steve Martin's The Jerk, the dog was referred to as "Stupid."

And let's not forget Repo Man, where everyone called each other a flippin' melonfarmer.

Will pass on buying this in blu-ray.
I don't really need to see Danny Noonan licking Lacy's boobs in high definition.
