See this post for details on what this is all about.

Film vs. Film Challenge: Round 2, Match 2

North By Northwest vs. Psycho

A battle of the Hitchcocks, as the Master of Suspense does battle with himself. North By Northwest, a romping adventure with an iconic star. Psycho, a terrifying thriller that shocked audiences.

Both are great Hitchcock movies, but I still prefer Psycho over North by Northwest.

This is the first one for which I've been compelled to express my hate for you, Eric. I'm going to have to consider this one for a while.

This one is pretty tough for me. The impact and influence of Psycho is almost without peer. It was a stunning, bold movie to make. Hitchcock just threw out the rulebook, said “screw it,” and decided to kick audiences in the crotch. A landmark film by any measure that cemented Hitchcock’s place in legend.

But North By Northwest is thrilling and fun and a good time each and every time. Cary Grant is awesome, one of my favorites, and Eva Marie Saint is sexy as hell here. And did I mention fun? North By Northwest is a lot of fun. Great score, great action, great plot. It’s all great.

Because I re-watch NbNW far more often than Psycho, I’m leaning hard to North By Northwest based on rewatchability alone. I’ll mull it over for a bit, though – Psycho’s influential and groundbreaking is hard to ignore – but North By Northwest sure does have a lot to love.

Despite the fact that I've appeared in a couple of ultra-low budget horror flicks, I'm not a fan of "man as a monster" movies. I've got to stick with NORTH BY NORTHWEST based on entertainment value.

Besides, I hadn't heard of anyone being afraid to visit Mount Rushmore after viewing Grant's wrong man on the run picture. Plus it holds up better to repeat viewings.

Gotta go for NxNW. Psycho may be thrilling, but NxNW is thrilling AND fun. And in color.

I wonder how many DUI suspects have tried the Cary Grant defense?

Spoiler: show

That's kind of the key for me. I rarely have the urge to watch Psycho, while North By Northwest I can pop in any time. If it's on the TV, no matter what scene it's one of the movies you just start watching. Psycho was probably more "important," by North By Northwest is far more entertaining.

I went with psycho. I like watching this movie to see Anthony Perkins performance if nothing else. I don't think it is perfect by any means, (the ending showdown scene doesn't work) but it does have one of the great film performances,. I havebt seen North by Northwest since I was a kid, so I can't really judge it.

I went with Psycho. It's the more unique of the two films. North By Northwest is an entertaining thriller, but Psycho redefined horror.

Psycho is my favorite, and the scariest Hitchcock film. So there.

I do love Eva Marie Saint. Or I did when I was 16.

Before Frank Lauro gets in here to put the smackdown on Matt for the use of "more unique" there, I'll go ahead and vote. :)
After considering it for a while, I'm going with North by Northwest. Psycho, while a brilliant film, is all about the hook, the suprise twist on "mother". Once you've seen it, that twist is lost on you forever, and you're left with a strong performance by Tony Perkins and some nice cinematography.
North by Northwest, on the other hand, is an exciting adventure, which invites you to relive it again and again for favorite bits.
Or, I like action movies better than horror movies. :)

I went with Psycho because it's my favorite Hitchcock film. It's been awhile since I've seen North by Northwest, but I do have it on my Netflix list.

PSYCHO had a greater impact on the whole of American cinema than did NORTH BY NORTHWEST. I love both movies, but I gotta go with the shower scene and the strings-only score and the ripped-off-everywhere tracking shots and the --

Well. It's PSYCHO. All apologies to Roger O. Thornhill and the longest kiss in film history (at the time).

*BUMP* as we go into the final few days of voting in Round 2. Voting close on Sunday! Only eight films will survive!

Based on impact, I'l go with Psycho. It's just a more important film, though not as entertaining as NxNW.

Hey, Psycho is probably on the list of 'Top 10 Uniquest Films Ever'.

Oh, other films are more uniquely uniquer. But most are less unique.

They just don't have enough uniquitude to compete.

Making them less unique.

:yay:
