Information from Rounder.com:
On April 12th, 2011 Rounder Records will release the eagerly anticipated Alison Krauss and Union Station album, Paper Airplane. A truly breathtaking collection of 11 exquisite songs, Paper Airplane is Krauss’ 14th album and the band’s follow-up to 2004’s triple Grammy® winning Lonely Runs Both Ways (Rounder). It is Krauss’ first release since her 2007 internationally acclaimed, multi-platinum collaboration with Robert Plant, Raising Sand, which won six Grammys including “Record Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year.”
Alison Krauss and Union Station features the talents of Krauss (fiddle and lead vocals), Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), Barry Bales (bass and harmony vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar and harmony vocals), and Jerry Douglas (Dobro and harmony vocals). Paper Airplane was produced by the band and recorded in Nashville with engineer Mike Shipley (Maroon 5, The Cars, Def Leppard, Joni Mitchell). As bluegrass virtuosos the members of Union Station are beyond compare, and the music they create together transcends all genres. Their work on films such as Cold Mountain and O Brother, Where Art Thou? has contributed immeasurably to a renaissance of American roots music.
Part of Alison Krauss’ incontestable talent is how effortlessly she bridges the gap between roots music and country, rock and pop. A highly sought-after collaborator, Krauss has worked with some of the biggest names in popular music, including James Taylor, Phish, Dolly Parton, Yo Yo Ma & Bonnie Raitt. Since signing with Rounder Records at the age of 14 in 1985 Krauss has sold in excess of 12 million albums and garnered 26 Grammy® Awards, the most for any female and the third most of any recording artist in Grammy® history.

Wow, I'm surprised at the negative comments about Union Station. Is it that you guys just don't like Bluegrass? I think she's at her best with them. I think those guys are some of the best musicians on the planet, and not just technically.
On the other hand, I really couldn't get into the Robert Plant pairing. And I like Robert Plant.

To be honest, I don't like when Alison has to share the vocal spotlight with the guys from Union Station. I also don't care for the bluegrassy instrumentals.

Living on the edge.
I'm with Greg...I think Union Station adds to the overall Alison Krauss experience. I'll take her either way though...solo or with the group. She's immensely talented and very likable.

I actually don't like U.S. male vocals Too twangy for me. The instrumentals are ok for me. I see AK as more of a singer/songwriter. Especially their last studio album, seemed like 2 separate cd's to me.

Produced by Mike Shipley? That's wild, man.
Listen to AKUS's live album from a few years ago and your appreciation for Union Station will deepen considerably. The playing is so tight and so flawless, you'd swear it was a studio recording.

According to the Alison Krauss webpage:
The Target deluxe edition features six additional songs, including three exclusive studio songs – “These Days” and “A Place Outside,” both written by Angel Snow and Krauss’ brother, Viktor Krauss; and “Frozen Fields,” composed by Jeff Black and Jon Randall. Three bonus tracks also available on the album include Krauss and her band performing live versions of “We Hide & Seek,” “Faraway Land” and “Every Time You Say Goodbye.”

On 2nd listen. I wish AK would lose US's Male vocalist (s). He/they are TERRIBLE. AWFUL . HORRIBLE. His voice makes me want to climb the walls. Irritating beyond belief. Etc.
US are fine musicians, & I love AK, but.....................
I run into this issue on every AK & US album
Speaking just of the tracks without the LAME HILLBILLY male vocalist, this isn't bad at all. I'll probably buy the Target version.
On a totally different subject, NPR's stream is pretty decent sounding for a stream. Curious what bitrate they're using.

That lame, hillbilly male vocalist is Dan Tyminski. In addition to his long-standing role with Union Station, Tyminski provided the George Clooney vocals in the movie, "Oh Brother, How Art Thou" and has a couple of albums under his own name. You may not like him but that is a distinctly minority opinion.

I wish for my sake it was just "may not like him". For me he has one of those voice that make me want to run & hide.

I think Alison's songs on here are excellent, and the wonder of a CD player is that you can program around the tracks you don't like! As I mentioned above, I prefer her solo work to her work with Union Station because I don't like having to listen to Dan Tyminski's tracks. I know he is respected in his genre, but I just don't care for him.

I'm happy that the 3 studio tracks are all Alison songs. Only one of the live tracks is an Alison song. I'm not sure where the live tracks are from, but they are listed as (c) 2002 Rounder Records.

I think I have bad news............. All 3 live songs are on "Alison Krauss & Union Station Live", the 2 cd set; which Amazon says is from 2002. I'm too lazy to go upstairs & check, but I kinda suspect Amazon is right about the date.
I'm not saying for certain they are the same recordings, but if i was a betting man..............
