The soul singer that has impressed me the most here in the new decade is a young man who calls himself John Legend. A truly fine singer, songwriter, pianist, and organist, his work has the same smooth sophistication as classic Stevie Wonder in the '70s. With only two studio albums under his belt, his chosen name "Legend" already seems fitting. I highly recommend his albums.

He's not a legend but he is damn good. My wife has both of his discs and John Legend is a talent, no doubt about it.

Legend also has a couple of CDs that predate his Sony major label releases... and more recently, he's released a live DVD and a Target-exclusive Christmas compilation. There are also a number of b-sides and remixes floating around out there, so happy hunting!

I was a fool to pass on him live in a small venue last year.

If he can maintain this level of quality on future albums, he will become a legend.

I think my vote actually goes to Anthony Hamilton... his major label debut was one of my favorite albums from that year, and given the right material he could become a true classic in his own right.

Michael,
The name doesn't ring a bell, but I'll investigate further. Maybe Blues&Soul has featured him.

Anthony hamilton is very good but I have to say I'm real impressed with John Legend. Direct TV subscribers can catch hin live in London on the Freeview channel this month.

Van Hunt is pretty damn good too-has anyone checked his stuff out yet? His albums are a little inconsistent but enjoyable.

I heard one of Van Hunt's albums. Had a few stand-outs but also filler. And whatever happened to D'Angelo?

Oh man, that's a book waiting to be written! Health problems, legal problems, label problems... he's been reduced to the occasional cameo appearance, and that's about it.
There's apparently at least one "comeback" album that's been shelved, and despite the occasional rumor of his imminent return to the music scene I'm certainly not holding my breath. Put it this way - Tupac will probably have another album released before D'Angelo.

Nikka is great - fantastic live show, too - but she seems to have lost a lot of momentum. One to keep an eye on, though.

Been perusing some Blues&Soul mags from 2005, and there was an Anthony Hamilton album from Rhino that got top marks.

Technically, Hamilton had two releases in 2005 - Ain't Nobody Worryin', featuring new material, and Soulife, a collection of older recordings and a few odds and ends. I'm guessing you're referring to the former; you can listen to various tracks on Hamilton's website and/or his MySpace page.
If you're interested, though, I definitely recommend Hamilton's 2003 release Comin' From Where I'm From as a starting point...
