New blood in the Cheap Trick lineup may have spurred the band into working harder than they've done in over a decade. Bassist Tom Petersson says they're already close to completing the follow-up to 2009's album The Latest – but the question is, who'll play drums on the record?

In March this year sticksman Bun E Carlos retired from touring after a bout of ill-health, although he officially remains a member of the band. But as Petersson comments, Cheap Trick tend to record while they're out on the road, which means album tracks could feature guitarist Rick Nielsen's son Dax behind the kit.

Petersson tells Billboard.com: "We were just in Los Angeles and we came up with 10 ideas that are very strong contenders. That's how it works now – we just do it as it happens. When opportunities come up we just put ideas together. Once you get 10 or 12 strong things, wow, we have the record.

"We do the majority of our recording as we work on the road. We go into studio here or there, or do something at sound checks. It's kind of like, if you're in the room you're on the record."

Carlos adding drum tracks later is always an option, but the boost in pace of creativity suggests Nielsen Junior's presence might be contributing enough to warrant his appearance on the final release.

In addition, Carlos' side-project seems to have fallen silent. Tinted Windows, which also features James Iha (ex Smashing Pumpkins), Taylor Hanson and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), released an album in 2009 but last updated their online presence in January.

No matter what happens, the 'American Beatles' are looking forward to putting out another record, even though it's unlikely they'll do much damage to the top end of the sales charts. Petersson says: "We're not unrealistic about it. We don't have to make records – we just really enjoy doing it."

Cheap Trick are currently on tour with Blondie, with both acts taking turns in the headline slot. Next month they'll revive their Beatles tribute show, Sgt Pepper's Live, before completing work on what will be their 18th album.

Bun E. did an interview last week

Quote:
http://www.sj-r.com/features/x279157777 ... de-project

‘Flame’ hasn’t burned out: Cheap Trick touring despite drummer’s break for side project

Bun E. Carlos no longer resembles the crazed drummer donning his iconic shirt-and-tie combo during Cheap Trick concerts, a cigarette dangling from his lips.

Thinner and quiet, the 59-year-old Rockford native, born Brad Carlson, is upbeat and constantly smiling during a recent interview in Springfield.

He’s not playing with his band mates during their headlining performance at the Illinois State Fair this year, but despite rumors that he gave up touring indefinitely because of a back injury, Carlos plans to go back on the road with side-project Tinted Windows after the band records a sophomore effort already in the works.

“After 36 years I want to take some time off, so I’ve taken some time off,” Carlos said of Cheap Trick. “We’re supposed to record in the fall and stuff like that, so I expect I’ll be bumping into them then.”

In the meantime, Cheap Trick has taken a play from the Van Halen book of touring, using a band member’s son to fill the shoes of rock greatness. Just as Eddie Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang, has replaced original bassist Michael Anthony, Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen has hired his son, Daxx, to fill in for Carlos.

But that isn’t to say the original drummer is putting the kibosh on touring.

Carlos said he plans to tour with his side-band, Tinted Windows, a super group consisting of musicians from popular ’90s bands: Taylor Hanson of Hanson, guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins and bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne.

The band released its self-titled debut last year and is in the process of writing a second album.

“Adam, the bass player, who wrote most of the tunes, and James are in the writing mode right now,” Carlos said. “Once we get a batch, we’ll go in and record them, but nothing’s going to happen before then. We’ve got to have some songs, get back in the studio, and then we’ll go back out and do some more dates.”

He’s still making money making music, but even Carlos admits the industry is a far cry from its golden era in the 1970s, when albums sold millions and bootlegging was limited to cassette tapes.

“When we used to play Springfield in the ’70s, this guy who was an independent promoter would hire us,” Carlos said. “He used to pay us in thousand dollar bills and five hundred dollar bills in 1978, so promoters used to be independent guys who had their own money from wherever they would get it. Now everything’s changed. Record companies are in the toilet because of downloading, and that’s too bad, but they need to find a better way to sell music to people who like music.”

He draws the comparison to a time in the middle of the 20th century, before albums were hot commodities. Now, as then, bands made their money on hit singles.

“This is like going back to the days when all they had were singles,” Carlos said. “People are downloading single tracks now, and they don’t want to buy 12 tracks; they just want to buy the one. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

“It’s just the business model is changing; it’s no big thing.”

I saw the Sgt. Pepper show at the Paris Las Vegas on Friday night...BEYOND awesome.

It started with their orchestra and men's chorus doing I Am The Walrus, followed by a video of interviews with Zander, Nielsen, and Petersson talking about their love of the Beatles. Then, out they come (with Daxx Nielsen on drums) and plow into Sgt. Pepper.

Robin does excellent impressions of John & Ringo. His Paul could use some work. He didn't attempt to mimic George, as Tom sang Within You Without You, with an Indian ensemble that was half Caucasian.

After they finished the album, the band took a break while the orchestra did a medley of CT hits, then they came back out and did Dream Police, World's Greatest Lover, Smile, IWYTWM, and Surrender. Then, they did the Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End medley.

Most remarkably, Geoff Emerick was at the show, running the sound board. After the show, he autographed my program, and I told him my favorite album he did was Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom.

His reply - "Oh, yeah - that was a good album."

I wish I could have afforded to go to Vegas and see this. Sounds alot better than the Sgt. Pepper set they released on CD/DVD with all the guest stars.

I love Imperial Bedroom too.

I also met Geoff Emerick working the boards at the Clearwater, FL show for CT's Sgt.Pepper's show.

Excellent show, included Donovan helping out as well (on stage that is). But back to Mr. Emerick, what a very nice guy. I spent a few minutes speaking with him and quoted him from his recent bio and it kind of blew him away, reciting word for word (it was easy, I have his bio on book audio :} ).

Glad you got to see them Hank. It was real treat for me as well as you by your comments.. Hopefully they will play NYC again so JohnG and Jimbo can go see them.

More than thirty years after the release of the internationally acclaimed album “Dream Police,” Cheap Trick is staging a multi-date show featuring songs from the platinum record.

The Rhythmic Noise Philharmonic Orchestra & Mind Choir will perform alongside these, and other hits, from Cheap Trick’s extensive catalog.

The series of shows - at Milwaukee’s Northern Lights Theater at Potawatomi Bingo Casino - kicks off January 20th, 2011 and includes 12 dates through February 26th.

For “Dream Police,” the band teamed up with sought after production designer Butch Allen (Paul McCartney, Metallica, No Doubt) and comic daredevil/producer Bello Nock. World-class video and film director and longtime Cheap Trick collaborator Jim Yukich also contributed.

“Dream Police was the first record where we felt the songs were well-suited for orchestration; that was a very expansive time for us musically,” says bassist Tom Petersson.

“Since then, we’ve been fortunate to work with several world-class orchestras – live and in the studio,” adds lead vocalist Robin Zander, “and after 36 years together, our band is thrilled to have an opportunity to present our songs – both new and old – with an orchestra and a unique state-of-the-art production.”

The shows take place at Milwaukee’s recently renovated Northern Lights Theater at Potawatomi Bingo Casino, less than two hours away from Chicago.

Retaining its intimate, up-close-and-personal atmosphere, the 500-seat theater ensures that there is not a bad seat in the house. The newly transformed, rich and modern space draws diverse internationally known musical and comedy acts with Dream Police being the premiere theatrical event in the venue.

Cheap Trick formed in the city of Rockford, IL in 1974. The multi-platinum band has sold over 20 million albums and had numerous hits including “Surrender,” “I Want You To Want Me” and “The Flame.”

I wonder if we will see them on the telecast? Usually only the Super Bowl has a halftime show.

I think we will-they show the halftime act at the Pro Bowl now and NCAA bowl games-the Goo Goo Dolls were on at halftime the other night of the Stanford-Virginia Tech game.

I remember seeing Sheryl Crow performing at a playoff game, in Pittsburgh I think.

I hope they show it!

Cheap Trick should be playing the Super Bowl instead of the Black Eyed Peas.

Wonder why they're not playing the Bears' upcoming game? My guess is the weather.

Yeah-I can tell you, it's a bitch to keep instruments in tune in the cold and it hurts to play. It is kinda fun though-for a few minutes.

They'll have to figure something out in a few years when there's a halftime concert at the Meadowlands Super Bowl.

Oh, it can be done, just not for long. BTO (or BT) played at halftime of the Grey Cup this year in late November in Edmonton where it may have been 20 degrees. They did a 5 song medley and actually played well and sounded fairly good. And they were actually playing.
There's also that famous clip of ELP playing in Montreal's Olympic Stadium as it was snowing in 1977!

All they need to do is hire a lip synching wonder for the show. Music these days is fake, why worry about a live show that is rarely live anyway.

My fear is that it will be the cast of whatever crappy Broadway "Rock" show is in vogue at that moment.

The Guess Who did the Grey Cup a few years ago as well. And Sheryl Crow did indeed do the Steelers/Chargers (I think) playoff game a few years back - she did "Soak Up The Sun".

I think they're going to show it.....or at least Bob Costas just mentioned during the pregame show that they had just finished a soundcheck and were playing at halftime. In the background, you saw Tom Petersson for a few seconds.

Didn't think they would, it isn't the Super Bowl where the halftime entertainment is more important than the game.
