I just received Madonna's latest album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" today, and have spun it to my great delight. It offers the same throbbing excitement as those old Donna Summer productions by Giorgio Moroder. But, alas, it's segued right the way through!. That's right, she's done a "Lovesexy" on us! The case-sticker blurb shouts "The non stop, all-dance tour de force", and I agree about the tour de force, but I want clean edits of my tour de force songs! Now I have to go out and pay extra money to acquire the single of "Hung Up", what a bummer! So how do you feel about segues? Aren't they just a case of artistic self-indulgence? The earliest segue I can think of, and maybe the first in popular music, is "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band" segueing into "With a Little Help From My Friends". That was startling and groundbreaking, a stroke of genius. A bit like the first freeze-frame ending in Francois Truffaut's 1959 nouvelle vague masterpiece, "The Four Hundred Blows". But every segue that has followed is inevitably copycat.

I remember sitting around once (This was a few years back) smoking dope with somebody a couple of years younger than me who was the proud owner of a "Dark Side Of The Moon" CD. About halfway through the disc, he pointed out to me the only part on the entire album where the music actually...stopped.
I almost hated to tell him that once upon a time, that was the point in the album where the audience was required to pick up the record and turn it over if they wanted to hear part two...
Back to the thread topic--my all-time favorite segue is on Alice Cooper's "Love It To Death", when "Second Coming" segued into "Ballad Of Dwight Fry" (which ultimately segued into "Sun Arise")
P.S.--I don't get high anymore. I could also easily go the rest of my life never hearing "Dark Side Of The Moon" again. Ditto Sgt. Pepper.

AMW, I follow you on DSOTM, but I still like to give Pepper an occasional spin.

I say Segues are an Artistic decision.
But please band them as separate tracks so I can play them on my M.P.3 player in Shuffle mode!

Well, as a Dead Head, I better like seques (and pot - preventive Dead joke deactivator)!

Agreed! I find that I combine tracks often for my Ipod to eliminate the breaks. This is ok with moderation, but on some situations, with some of the Dead discs, I have to combine the entire disc into one track, which can be a pain when on the run, trying to determine what I want to listen to.

I agree that they are an artistic decision, it's just that I often fail to see the point of them. What are they trying to say with them? Maybe that certain songs belong together in mood or theme. What about when they segue a whole album?

I was upset, though, when Heartbreaker & Livin' Lovin Maid (She's Just a Woman) were seperated on the Led Zep box set. (onto entirely different sets!) After hearing segues together for so long its disoreinting to NOT hear them together via shuffle.
My real pet peeve is when they "Break" live albums into tracks and the spoken introduction is on the end of the previous track so the song can start at the beginning of the track. I wish that they would simply band the intro seperately.

I don't compile for MP3, I just like clean edits of studio tracks. To me one song is just as much an entity as one album.

Some segues are better than others. One of the best segues in my book is "Sonata In D Major" and "You Need a Saviour" by Michael W. Smith on his debut album as a solo musician (he was previously Amy Grant's keyboardist) entitled "The Michael W. Smith Project."

I agree with you one thousand percent.
Who actually establishes the track points on CDs? Are they out of touch, or what? Don't they realize that, for example, Frank Sinatra's introduction of "You Will Be My Music" from "Sinatra 80th Live" belongs with "You Will Be My Music," not with the preceding track?

One of my favorites is "Black Magic Woman" in "Oye Como Va" on Abraxas.

Well, to use the original example, if you're trying to capture a dance club feel then you're going to have a continuous mix... basically trying to capture that experience of DJs stringing together records.
Over the years, I've introduced more and more segues into my mix CDs because it can be damn fun figuring out an elegant way to blend one track into the next. But I also band the tracks for ease of use.
And c'mon, every segue a copycat of the Beatles? You're reaching with that one.

My favorite segue is the Misplaced Childhood album by Marillion. I couldn't think of listening to it any other way.

I know, mjb, I was only joking here. But there is always the risk of an original effect turning into a cliché. Segues haven't reached that point yet, because they for the most part have been used sparingly. I see your point about Madonna's latest capturing the club feel. But that works better on those DJ remix albums, where the DJ compiles various artists.

Oh yes, I forgot that one, my second-favorite (double) segue: "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" - "Oye Como Va".

I agree. These are all essential together. And let's not forget what radio did to Queen's We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions. (Can't have the eggs w/o the bacon, right?)
