Multiversity Described as a tour of the 52 universes, this upcoming eight-issue series from DC pits Grant Morrison and an all-star list of artists with defining and redefining seven of the most prominent universes in the DC’s Multiverse. Each of the first seven issues will work as a defacto one-shot for a universe, complete with heroes and villains, while the eight will pull it together into one massive story. In an interview with CBR, Morrison describes each issue as “a bible for what could potentially be an entire comic line”. Linking back to the diverse worlds-building seen in 52, Multiversity will feature an issue devoted to the Charlton characters which ties into Watchmen, a book about Captain Marvel titled Thunderworld, and several more. Although a massive project and undertaking, Morrison is one of the few people with enough raw creativity and dedication to pull it off – and its already been announced that both Frank Quitely and Cameron Stewart are amongst the talent roster. This could be DC’s answer to Fear, Itself as the event book of summer 2011.

I couldn't care less about the idea of a multiverse, and tying the Charlton stuff into Watchmen is questionable, but the talent involved (Morrison, Quitely, and Stewart) is enough to get me to take a look. And if DC manages to spin any of the issues off into a revival of certain characters (Captain Marvel, Blue Beetle, the Question) that'd be really cool.

I love a multiverse and agree with everything else you said. A clean start for some characters would be great though how to explain the different earths but same characters (like the Shazam family) is bizarre. Fina Crisis should have shunted them all back to their own universes. Two JSAs is not the answer.

I've heard about it for so long I had thought they just decided not to do it. It sounds like one more project that presents characters we know, but with a slight twist. I'd rather DC either create new characters altogether or new story lines for their existing characters than give us yet another alternate version of the existing characters. They've gone to that well way too often to make me interested in a blurb like that.

Clearly, they're not capable and fans are not willing to give it a try.

New characters don't sell well in today's market. That's a certain amount of evidence for the second part of your statement, but there's not much evidence for the first part. If you'd said "or" instead of "and" I'd be inclined to agree with you.

Yeah you're right. But for whatever reason, no one seems to be able to create a character since Wolverine, that has REALLY caught on.

Depends on what you mean by "caught on" -- Bone, Hellboy, Invincible, and a few others have done pretty well.
Within the DC/Marvel universe, I'd say Deadpool is getting close to a Wolverine level of popularity. DC's a little tougher since they seem to focus a bit more on legacy/derivative heroes. Maybe John Constantine.
