I see that Pretty Woman is on. I've never seen Pretty Woman. Should I invest the time in this movie, just so I recognize the Pretty Woman pop culture references that people toss out from time to time?

I avoided Jerry Maquire for years before watching, then found out the origin of that "you had me at" meme.

They should write cliff notes for these Bridgette Jones, Steel Magnolia, Cold Mountain movies with a listing of pop culture quotes and their correct usage.

Commercials or no commercials? It's not worth it if you have to sit through commercials.

Pretty Woman seemed like a pretty enjoyable movie at the time. I don't remember any pop culture memes in it, though.

What were the things from Bridgette Jones and Cold Mountain? And Steel Magnolias for that matter?

Jerry Macguire was an odd one -- it spun off so many (show me the money, you had me at hello, you complete me, and I think some more).

Pretty Woman -- the film that tells women it's okay to be a whore and to not bother trying to better yourself because a sugar daddy will come along and take care of you for the rest of your life. What a wonderful movie, and Julia Roberts is a national treasure.

I could see a remake being done within the next 10 years.

Another meme from Pretty Woman:

"What are you doing in the bathroom? Are you doing drugs?"

"No, I'm flossing the strawberry seeds out of my teeth."

"Oh, ha-ha! I thought you were doing drugs because you are a whore I picked up on the street! There is more to you than meets the eye."

"I am offended that you thought that. I am not some . . . some . . . well, yes I am. But I wasn't taking drugs."

I used to have a book about the classic Warner Brothers cartoons which contained a section devoted to explaining references to 1930's and 1940's pop culure (James Petrillo, "Was this trip really necessary?", etc.) that are typically lost on modern audiences. It was invaluable, and I wish I still had that book, if only for that page.

And its worth it just to see George Costanza try to mount Julia Roberts.

The only cool part in Pretty Woman is when she's singing along to Prince's "Kiss" with her Walkman on.

I feel this is a misuse of the phrase "worth it."

Nearly every human character (and many of the toons) are barely disguised parodies of movie stars of the day. I didn't get this at all as a kid.

The Hope/Crosby "road" movies are also filled with pop culture references that are easy for us modern day folks to miss. Then again, the other day I caught part of Disaster Movie, one of those recent Airplane-style comedies, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't getting a lot of the references in that either (though considering how lame the humor was, maybe that was a good thing.)
