I do not own any Phish CD's, and would like to add some to my library. Since I'm a "Mulehead," I have no idea where to start. Can anyone suggest a few great studio releases? Just like any other jam band, I'm sure where they shine is the stage, but I don't like live albums. Are Phish the exception?

My wife, a HUGE fan says Hoist and Billy Breathes are both good, but she's all about the live recordings. She says that the live stuff of amazing.

Now, Me, I'm all about the metal, country, hip hop, classic rock, blues, bluegrass. I just can't do hippy music. Must be a mental block. I can tolerate Phish though. I can't take the Dead.

Hoist is pretty good. I think Trey Anastasio's solo output is more accessible, particularly his s/t release.

While not a fan, I understand "HAMPTON COMES ALIVE", a six CD live set is pretty good.

The first album I heard by Phish was Lawnboy, and I was onboard. (Antelope and Bouncing Around the Room are still two of my favorite Phish songs.) I also enjoy Rift. Another studio album, A Picture of Nectar, came out between those other two, and it features several songs that would become common at concerts. Those are probably my three personal favorite studio albums.
I'm not as familiar with all the live recordings out there (the huge Hampton set might well be one of the best, although I haven't heard it), but if I'm going to listen to live Phish, I'm most likely to put on Slip, Stitch and Pass or Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995.
I have the first 10 albums or so of Phish, and they are definitely a different animal live. For one review I wrote of a concert I said that the first set was "more jam than bread," but that the second set was actually rather special. As a Mulehead, I'm sure you can relate to the fact that some concert moments just stand taller.

Hey there. In terms of the studio albums, I would say 1993's Rift, 2000's Farmhouse and 1996's Billy Breathes are the three best, but I agree that live releases are the place to start. In terms of live releases, I'd check out either Live Phish 09 (Vermont in 1989) or A Live One (from 1994 shows). Happy hunting.
