Blade Runner vs. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Ridley Scott’s visionary film, Blade Runner, is considered one of the finest example of the science fiction genre, a film that influenced the look and feel of genre films for years to come, while remaining hugely popular with fans. Sergio Leone’s visionary film, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, is considered one of the finest example of the western genre, a film that influenced the look and feel of genre films for years to come, while remaining hugely popular with fans.

Good timing, I just 2 minutes ago, questioned whether the Good, Bad, Ugly really was the all time classic that IMDB thinks it is.

I vote Blade Runner for sentimental reasons.

Never saw Blade Runner. Despite liking Harrison Ford, no real desire to do so.

The Good, THe Bad, and the Ugly is a fine movie.

You're an evil man, first Shawshank vs Cuckoo's Nest and now this. Both movies are on the must re-watch list for me and making me pick is just wrong, but seeing that the version of Blade Runner is the Directors cut with the narration removed, I'm going with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The final movie in the Man With No Name trilogy and music by Ennio Morricone make this the winner for me.

By all means, disregard the cover art I've posted. It in no way represents the version in the running, if there are multiple versions of the film in quetsion. I'm just posting them to offer some visuals to the proceedings. Makes for a nicer looking thread.

Not a fan of westerns, no matter how critically acclaimed they are. I am, however, a fan of Harrison Ford and that makes this a no-brainer.

As much as I like Blade Runner, I think The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is the better film. Blade Runner drags quite a bit at times.

I've got to go with Blade Runner here. Not only is The Good, The Bad & The Ugly not my favorite Leone film, it's not even my favorite of the "Man With No Name" trilogy. (That honor goes to For A Few Dollars More.)

Oh, it's great, to be sure, but others hold it in MUCH higher esteem than I do.

In Blade Runner, I think Ridley Scott captured the mood, tone and look of Philip K. Dick's dystopian future wonderfully. So dreary and muddy; chrome beaten by weather and age; the ever-blinking lights of the city more alive than its populace. While the narrative falters here and there, from a purely technical standpoint it's an astonishing realization of a grand vision.

Couple that with the "what does it mean to be human?" subtext that I always find compelling, and the fantastic monologue Rutger Hauer offers at the end before "dying," and you have a winner. A classic of the genre.

Ridley Scott sure as hell did peak early, though.

Got to be Bladerunner (unless its the director's cut with the stupid unicorn sequence). Beautifully atmospheric and futuristic without being overly gadgetty I.e. No people walking round in silver minidresses eating blue pills for dinner, and Harrison Ford at the height of his charms.

However I loathe westerns as a genre so put a bucket of shit up against a Western and the bucket would get my vote.

Clint Eastwood. Second only to Jack Nicholson in unlovelyness.
And his nose is a silly shape.

I have not been invited to enter.

Plus, I've never heard of it. Are there responsibilities associated with it? A prize?

The bad thing about this is, the Directors Cut is the only cut available anymore, unless you can find a copy of the theatrical release on VHS, it hasn't been released on DVD(hopefully it will be one day).

Good news, Robert. Not only will it happen one day, it will happen this year.

From the link:
Quote:
Warner Home Video is bringing Ridley Scott’s futuristic film noir classic Blade Runner back to DVD in a big way.

...

In 2007, Warner will unveil Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Scott’s definitive new version of the cult classic, which stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos and Daryl Hannah.

The film will be released theatrically in select major U.S. cities, followed by a multidisc special-edition DVD release that also will contain three alternate versions of Blade Runner: the original U.S. theatrical cut, the expanded international theatrical cut and the 1992 cut. A wide array of bonus features are being prepared for the anniversary edition.

Tow more that make a tough choice but for me it's Bladerunner. Stunning visuals and a compelling story that although, as noted, it lags a bit, still manages to keep me engrossed. Great casting and the setting was perfect.

Yeah, Alien and Bladerunner were a damn fine start, what happened?

As much as I loved Blade Runner, I went with the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly. Great western epic.

And I love Clint Eastwood! He is sexy! Always! :ohyes:

If you visit my blog and check the side bar titled "All About Me," you see who have listed as my favorite actor.

I have the special edition of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, which explains a few plot holes. This is an evil question to ask because both movies are so great.

I went with GB&U in part because of it's flaws. It's a lot a fun, wide open movie. Great mix of stars and director - and subject matter. Sergio Leone tried to get a three way gun fight going in For a few Dollars More, but he couldn't quite get it. In GB&U, he gets it. Three men, all expert shots. None of them trusts either of the other two. First man to draw may get his man, but in doing so, he'll leave himself open to the third man. So who draws first?
