Tomorrow will be an interesting day at school, with almost everyone having stayed up past midnight, which almost everyone does anyways, but it will still be interesting.
Ohio will be a very tired state.

The SEC may rule, but Notre Dame has also had their hat handed to them by a Big Ten school and a Pac 10 school, so they're not much of a barometer of anything.

Well, I cannot stay up much longer and from the score at this point, I really don't want to, so barring a miraculous comeback by the Buckeyes, congratulations to the Florida Gators.

Makes me wonder why I'm staying up to watch it. I guess because I only watch one college game a year, and this is always the one.

This game really could have gone either way. If you had asked me before the SEC Championship game, I would've said the Gators would be lucky to not be blown out. After the performance they gave for the SEC game, I felt more confident they could do it in the National Championship.
I do think Ohio State's 51 day lay-off did not help them. The Gators got in two extra weeks of practice that I don't think the Buckeyes were allowed since they didn't have any games left.

See my post in the profanity thread downstairs for my true thoughts on this game. Apart from that, congrats to the Gators and Urban Meyer. That was a well-played game for them, and a total, total letdown for OSU. After the kickoff return TD for Ted Ginn Jr. to start the game, it was a mess on both sides of the ball for Tressel and Troy Smith. Great play on offense and defense for the Gators, Questionable play calling from OSU coaches, Ginn got hurt, the 52 day layoff, and maybe even a little of the Heisman curse created a lethal poison for the Buckeyes.

Just a note about the "Heisman Curse"... The last Gator to win the Heisman also won the National Championship 10 years ago in a game where the Gators were equally impressive.
There have been more times than not that the Gators have been a disappointing team (the 1995 National Championship comes to mind.) The most impressive thing about tonight's game to me was they didn't commit a bunch of stupid penalties like they did the rest of the year.

Says the Big Ten runners up. You know, I don't recall blasting Michigan after their thumping by USC.
Oh, yeah, I am from Ohio. I don't do that.

It's ironic that one of the main reasons the Gators were playing in THIS year's national championship is that the human voters did not want a repeat of what happened when the Gators last won. Then, the Gators played Florida State whom they had already LOST to in the regular season.
Still, it's hard to argue with the results on the field. Congratulations to Florida, but college football needs a playoff tournament.

The 1996 situation was totally different. There was no BCS. The Rose Bowl was determined on both sides by conference ties, the Orange Bowl was required to host the Big 12 Champion, the Sugar Bowl was the required host of the SEC, Champion, etc. The Florida/Florida St. matchup in the Sugar Bowl that year was the only credible availabe matchup, and EVEN THEN it was not going to be the national championship game -- another loss by Arizona State in the Rose Bowl was required.
Under today's system, the Gators would probably not have gotten that second shot at Florida State. But they did under the the encumbered bowl system of that time.
All of this points to the common sense of a playoff system (as you go on to say).
I must point out for the sake of history that the issue going into this game (for many pundits) was whether Florida even deserved to be there. Now the isse seems to be whether Ohio State did. It is breathtaking to me that anybody would question whether the SEC Champion is a worthy contender for the national championshiop. If my memory serves, the SEC Champion has won the BCS championship (since its inception) every time it has been given the opportuntiy to play for it (Tennessee, LSU, now Florida, any others?).
And with what Boise State did this year -- the little guys also sent their message. It's time for a playoff. This Florida/OSU will be a milestone in the historical march to a playoff. People will remember is an example of "You have to play the games on the field."
Also for "That long layoff is dumb -- we could be playing games during that period without lengthening the season."
Also for "The Gators are awesome -- why should we even bother with a playoff because they will win it every year."
Okay that last one not so much -- that was mine.

I wish I had done that, as it is I stayed up 'till 1 am, I have no recollection between when the game ended and crawling into bed so I can't tell you what I was doing.
Very tired and upset this morning.
Congrats to the Gators.

I don't know about the Gators being able to win the national championship every year. Even Spurrier fielded some teams that stunk it up in big games (the January 2000 bowl game against Miami being one of them.)
I do think the SEC is one of the tougher leagues, but the SEC doesn't always beat their out of conference opponents. On any given day one team could defeat another one.
My opinion is Ohio State really wasn't ready to play that game last night. Whether they were cocky, the 51 days off, whatever, they did not have a strong game plan in place.
The Gators were so fired up, though, that I don't know many teams that could have beat them last night for that particular game. Through the rest of the season, there have been many games where they could've gotten beaten.
Something that makes this years team so good is that they are a team. No one person stands out as a superstar above the others, except maybe Reggie Nelson. Throughout the year we have been without some of our stronger players and other guys have stepped up to the plate and barely skip a beat. The Gators were supposed to be lost after Marcus Thomas was kicked off the team. Other guys came in and got the job done.
Something that Urban Meyer has stressed for the football team and Billy Donovan has stressed for the basketball team is it's not about one single person. Last year's basketball team did the same thing. Each of the players had their shining moments where it's really hard to pick one who was better than the others. Joakim Noah got the most press at the end of the season, but they each had games where they kicked ass.
