From slicingupeyeballs.com:

Although his catalog was just put back into print last month, Peter Gabriel is planning a full series of new reissues in 2011, including an expanded 25th anniversary edition of his crossover smash So packaged with mixes, demos and new artwork.

In his latest monthly video update to fans, Gabriel announces plans to reissue his back catalog next year, noting, “I’ve been given a little boot up the backside as it’s 25 years next year from So’s original release. So we want to try and do something around that” (via Genesis-News.com). Gabriel adds that he’s got someone rooting around for “mixes and demos,” and that he’d like to “see if we can get some kind of special package around that.” He offers no further details on So or his other titles, which were re-released in late September using the same remastered versions first issued in 2002.

He did note, however, that he’s been talking to an artist “who plays with albums, often taking a lot of the visual information away, leaving hair or eyes or hands,” and that he wants to use those techniques to take “a new look at all the album sleeves, which I think we’ll do something with next year as part of this re-release.”

In the October update, Gabriel also said he recently filmed a performance of his New Blood orchestral tour in Verona, Italy (”Hopefully we’ll be able to get that out one day,” he said), and added that work continues on the orchestral re-recordings of his old hits that he plans to release as a companion to this year’s Scratch My Back.

Finally-although I hope he doesn't get all hip and interactive with these and just gives us the remastered album with a disc of all the b-sides. mixes and rare tracks. "So" is the beginning of my least favorite era of Gabriel, but I'd get the entire catalogue no matter what especially 3, Security, a proper Plays Live and Birdy.

B-sides, songs done for various movies and other projects, maybe some early live rarities. Don't need to hear the demo for "Sledgehammer", although I have a 12" vinyl mix of that song that's good, and isn't on CD.

How about remastering the German language releases and adding them to the English versions as a Bonus Disc.

There's got to be an easy punchline somewhere...a brief, smartassed comment that would sum up my thoughts on this item...but for the life of me, I cannot quite grasp what that punchline might be...

Actually, Britney hasn't released anything since the "Singles Box" came out last November, and my Britney stuff isn't even here at this condo where I'm currently living. But it is certainly gratifying to know that the contents of a modest plastic storage container have managed to gain both a reputation and an influence on others that now seem be entirely beyond my control!

I started compiling a Gabriel "odds & ends" a while back, but I never was able to complete it. I agree it would be nice to have all the B-sides and stray tracks made available again. I know some people are into demos, mixes, etc., but I just don't get why artists think they're more desirable than finished songs that were previously released but are now hard to find.

It's more of a forum in-joke really, kinda like knowing that Linda is actually a natural blonde who dyes her hair.

There are several bootleg titles which have captured most if not all of this material. As for the relevant tracks from the So era, there are enough to justify a second disc but anything beyond that (demos, live tracks, etc.) would be gravy.

The German versions have some value to collectors because they don't simply use an alternate vocal but in some cases also feature different takes/mixes of the musical tracks.

I speak a little German and enjoy listening to those versions.

From Peter Gabriel's website the other day...

Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the release date of So.

Watch out for a celebratory release before the end of the 25th year.

(I'd say that means this should be out sometime in the next century knowing PG, but hopefully it's really happening and the others will follow).

I'd be much more interested in expanded editions of the 1st 3 PG solo albums. While I do own it, I've always felt that So was a step backwards for PG & over rated.

It sounds like this is finally happening (PG likely put it on hold so it wouldn't compete with the New Blood album). Anyway, he's asking folks to submit photos of ticket stubs and other memoribilia from the So era to include in the album art. In the video update on the site, he also mentions including some sort of concert film...
