I have a few of these--discs that contain exactly a single song on a single track qualify, of course. So, too, would remix singles and promos--I have some that contain up to ten versions of the same song, lasting as long as many full-length albums.

But I've acquired a couple of interesting discs this year that seem to take this rule to a new extreme: One is a German compilation containing nineteen cover versions of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind" (with a live twentieth version by Dylan himself), and the other is an Elvis Presley release on the Follow That Dream "official bootleg" label--disc two of the deluxe edition of the "Loving You" soundtrack contains every take of the title cut recorded by Elvis on February 14, 1957. That's twelve takes of the "Farm Version", twenty-one takes of the "Main Version", and fifteen of the twenty-one "Main Version" takes that were recorded in "binaural", a primitive type of stereo. Thus, the single song "Loving You" appears on the disc a whopping forty-eight times. (It appears an additional six times on the thirty-one track first disc.)

What other CD's would qualify for this list?

I've put together a couple cdr's of different versions of a Grateful Dead rarity I like alot that has only 1 official release that I'm aware of: Days Between.
The only official release that I'm aware of is a live version on the out of print So Many Roads box.

I have Embryonic Journey by Jorma Kaukonen and Tom Constantnen. As the backside of the CD cover says "What's better than listening to an alternate version of Jorma Kaukonen and Tom Constanten performing "Embryonic Journey?" Listening to 11 versions!

I'll bet that's really cool. What's the label?

It came out on Relix in 1995. Limited edition, signed by both artists.

The Bear Family label put out a compilation with (at least) 25 different versions of "Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling" from the HIGH NOON soundtrack.

Several years ago I saw a compilation that was nothing but various versions of the jazz standard "Round Midnight."

Many CD singles have one track and numerous remixes of that same track.

I miss the old days of promo only cd singles with 2-4 live tracks or b-sides. A few years back most changed over to just 1 song.

There was a comp, some long time back, of different artist's versions of Susanne Vega's Tom's Diner (including her own or one she did with DNA, I think?).

Yes. Interesting timing; the best version of T's D that I've ever heard is on the new Vega remakes Vol 2 cd.

Appropriate for an artist who only has the one song. :)

Check out the Stairways To Heaven CD that came out in 1995. 12 Australian bands doing the Zep classic. A lot of these are impersonator bands (in the style of The Doors, The B-52's, Elvis, The Beatles), others done by original bands. Some of these are a flat out hoot, just as funny as Dread Zeppelin. Play the clips and laugh:

Does Beethoven's Ninth Symphony count? I've heard that when Sony was developing the
compact disc, they deliberately designed it so that it could hold 75 minutes so that even the
slowest performance of Beethoven's Ninth can be recorded on one side. New Year's Day is
a big holiday in Japan, and one of their traditions is performing that symphony. (Although if
Wikipedia is to be believed, that was just an excuse to keep Phillips from gaining a competitive
edge over Sony in manufacturing compact discs.)

The time issue you mention is correct regarding cd's & the 9th, though I thought the original spec was 70 minutes, not 75. That was why 1 song was left off of the first cd pressing of Price's 1999; it was added back when the standard was expanded to the current 80 minutes.

Jimi Hendrix - Versions On a Theme - Red House
Contains several versions of 'Red House' and one version of John Lee Hooker performing it.

Maybe I should play it again after not playing it since I brought it in 1989.

There's a 1993 UK disc called "Gimme Shelter" that has a dozen artists' takes on that one song:
1. Voice of the Beehive & Jimmy Somerville
2. Heaven 17 with Hannah Jones
3. New Model Army featuring Tom Jones
4. Cud with Sandie Shaw
5. Kingmaker
6. Thunder
7. Little Angels
8. Hawkwind & Samantha Fox
9. 808 State & Robert Owens
10. Pop Will Eat Itself vs Gary Clail vs Ranking Roger vs The Mighty Diamonds vs The On U Sound System
11. Blue Pearl (produced and mixed by Utah Saints)
12. Rolling Stones (live version)

Paul McCartney's first "Fireman" CD, Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest consists of 9 different mixes of the same song, each with it's own different title.

This probably doesn't qualify, but Prince's Lovesexy CD is programmed as only one track.
