Rhino Handmade Expands Richard And Linda Thompson’s Legendary Swan Song With Unreleased Live Performances From Their Emotionally Charged Final Tour

Shoot Out The Lights is Richard and Linda Thompson’s final album together and, ironically, the folk-rock couple’s most artistically acclaimed and commercially successful. The album was recorded, scrapped, and rerecorded before finally emerging in 1982, arriving just around the time that the couple split up. Despite the separation, they embarked upon a U.S. tour to promote the album, delivering emotionally charged performances at every turn. Rhino Handmade reissues the couple’s legendary swan song as a two-disc set that includes the original album along with a bonus disc of 11 unreleased live performances from the tour.

SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS’ circuitous path began in 1980 when Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty—who’d toured with the Thompsons that year—produced and financed the album, hoping it would earn the unsigned couple a new record contract. Failing to secure a record deal, the album was eventually shelved.

The Thompsons persevered, signing with producer Joe Boyd’s independent Hannibal Records the following year. They quickly returned to the studio with several musicians from the Rafferty sessions—guitarist Simon Nicol, drummer Dave Mattacks, and bassist Pete Zorn—and rerecorded six songs from the previous sessions plus two new songs. In contrast to the drawn-out sessions with Rafferty, Boyd recorded the album live in just three days, an approach that highlighted the band’s spontaneity and gave the songs a palpable edge. In the reissue’s liner notes Zorn quips: “The album’s so good, we did it twice!”

The release of SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS and a planned U.S. tour were put on hold until 1982 to give Linda time to recover from the birth of the couple’s third child. Sadly, when the tour finally began that spring, the Thompsons’ marriage was over.

The bonus disc documents the tumultuous tour with 11 unreleased live performances, all but one taken from shows in San Francisco and Santa Cruz, California. The songs draw from the Thompsons’ records together, including three from SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS, “Back Street Slide,” “Did She Jump Or Was She Pushed?” and the title track; “Borrowed Time” from Sunnyvista (1979); “Pavanne” from First Light (1978); and “For Shame Of Doing Wrong,” “Dargai,” and “Dimming Of The Day” from Pour Down Like Silver (1975). Several covers are also featured: Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk Blues,” “I’m A Dreamer” by Fairport Convention singer Sandy Denny, and Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine,” a song Richard covered with Fairport Convention on 1969’s What We Did On Our Holidays.

The set’s accompanying 40-page booklet includes details about the album and tour from Richard, Linda, the band, and Boyd, who recalls the fraught tour: “Linda kicked Richard in the shins during a guitar solo in Providence and threw a bottle at him in the Buffalo airport, but sang with an intensity I’d never heard before. Gone was the hesitant tone; the heartbreaking ballads poured out of her and mesmerized audiences. The band, meanwhile, kept their heads down and amazed the Yanks with their precision and power. Richard was his usual genius self, only more so.”

This manages to be both an amazing surprise *and* deeply disappointing-- no RT album has more demanded a 2CD edition, but it was the Rafferty version of the album one would have expected to fill out the set. But now that I'm over the initial disappointment, the live disc does sound awfully enticing. Can't wait go hear "I'll Keep It With Mine" and "I'm A Dreamer."

Perhaps not surprisingly, it's also missing the bonus track from the early CD edition "Lucky In Life" (or is it "Lucky In Love"-- I forget). After the track was dropped, I remember RT suggested they add a blurb boasting "now without bonus track".

I'm going to have to buy this, but it's really a shame that it's through handmade & will likely cost $30-$40 + shipping.

Wonderful, wonderful. This brings back very strange memories. I first saw RT at McCabe's in Santa Monica in late '81 - early '82 at a solo acoustic show...introduced by the McCabe's booker. Later in '82 I saw both RT / LT sets at the Roxy...legendary now because of the performances and LT's post show meltdown. The sets were stunning, certainly some of the best live music I've ever experienced. Pity there was no taping of those shows. I can still remember RT walking to stage alone through the crowd, LT coming in with a small entourage, the bassist's (Pete Zorn?) T-Shirt saying "Tour Therapist"(?), LT's crack about "California wine tasting like nail polish", a monumental version of "Sloth" etc. Later that summer there was an article in Time magazine about them and when they talked about the marriage break-up, out of nowhere I thought...the booker from McCabe's. Years later I read that I was right.

I would love to hear the Rafferty version of the album, and how about a CD reissue of "Sunnyvista" (the tapes are somewhere..."Borrowed Time" is on "Watching The Dark"). However, this will do just fine for now.

There was a Hannibal cd of Sunnyvista. I own it. I just discovered it's out of print selling for quite a bit.

You are right. I think I was confusing it with a demo that was recorded around that time. Danger of posting on the road.

I saw them in a small club in DC during that tour. They walked in a side door about five feet from me to get onstage. The way the stage was set up, I was looking right at Dave Mattacks and Simon Nicol. Richard and Linda were squabbling quite a bit. I assumed this was just some English show biz thing; I didn't know until much later that their marriage had failed and they were fighting honestly. Eventually I kind of tuned them out and just watched Mattacks and Nicol. I was and remain wonderfully impressed with their talents.

About 10 years later I saw Richard Thompson in DC with Danny Thompson on bass, Mattacks on drums, and Pete Zorn on a little bit of everything. One of the best shows I've ever seen. The interplay between Richard and Danny was wonderful. And Zorn and Mattacks never missed a beat. It was great fun to watch musicians working together to make great music and enjoying the process themselves.

How many versions of this do I need?

One more I guess if the price is not too extreme

"Gerry Rafferty—who’d toured with the Thompsons that year—produced and financed the album, hoping it would earn the unsigned couple a new record contract. Failing to secure a record deal, the album was eventually shelved."

Wouldn't it be nice to have this first version of the LP as part of the expanded edition?

Re the Rafferty; there were a few tracks released on the Watching the Dark 3 disc set that came out about 10 years ago. Also on a Linda sampler called Dreams Fly Away. Both are still findable. Rt was unhappy with the Rafferty production ( he believed it was too pop sounding) and will most likely not agree to it being released as a whole. I also heard there were some financial issues between Rt an Rafferty.... The bonus track was called Living in Luxury, and was removed at Rt's request to Joe Boyd. Rt has claimed he hates bonus material added to his re releases. He has said that the albums should stand on their own. Now we need re releases of Sunnyvista, and the incredibly underrated First Light

He is really going to hate this one, then.

Just got an email from Rhino with the official pre-order announcement of this. I love this album but there is no way I'm putting up $39.98 (plus shipping) just to get 11 live tracks and some nice packaging. I've already go this on vinyl and CD. $19.98 and I might go for it.

Despite my earlier post, I'm having similar thoughts. $40 + s/h for an 11 track live cd is ridiculous. This is the kind of thing that encourages downloading.

Yes, but you can take your other copy of Shoot Out the Lights and sell it at your local used CD store for $2.00. :)

Totally agree with you guys about the price being steep, especially for those of us who have already bought this album multiple times. That being said, I gotta have this. The live tracks sound really good. I plan on finding a friend or two who want one as well so that we can get free shipping.

Anyone any comments on the live tracks? I did note that in the main they come from the gig at which Linda was not present and the following/final gig when according to Joe Boyd "...the edge had completely gone, and her nervous tic was back, her pitch was bad...." - Strange Affair pp214
