That would've been difficult. It's hard to find people saying bad things about it.

Why didn't you like it?

I've only read the first volume, but it seems to be a one-note. Ellis takes a movie or comic from our pop culture and infuses a sideway version of them into Planetary so he can whack off all over them. It might have been cute once or twice, but after several it just makes it look like he can't come up with ideas without relying on other fiction for his inspiration.

Cassaday's art is inconsistent. One panel is pen contours, the next is hatching, then next might be color line made in PS and all of it is bland for the story. The art is not bad compared to most comic book artists, but all I heard for years was how great Cassaday is and I just don't see it.

Wow -- someone else has the same opinion of Planetary that I do. Nice to know.

I also had problems telling what was supposed to be happening in between panels a good two thirds of the time -- no consistent narrative flow -- but I attributed that to me being an old fart who doesn't get this generation's funny books.

That's sensible.

I especially don't want to own that copy. I turned it into a scratch and sniff. :ohyes:

My God, now I've looked up Fap. And went "duh!"

I got OMEGA THE UNKNOWN for a steal, but while I am intrigued by the story and its telling, it's hard to recommend an incomplete storyline without warning.

I busied myself with some McCloud advice on inking last night over coffee, but the [u]Whatever Happened to the Dark Knight?[u] trade seemed to have a sprinkle of magic dust about it.

A good thread would be, "which incomplete series/ short run fires your imagination most?"

That would be a good thread... you could even expand it to include any kind of comics that inspire you creatively.

On the other hand, so far after two issues (I have the third but was too busy yesterday to read it), I can
recommend Thor The Mighty Avenger. This is a much more interesting retake on Thor's early Silver Age
time at Marvel. And while some may find the artwork cartoony, or not exactly realistic, I find that it
works quite well within the context of the story.

This.

I bought the first two issues with extremely low expectation, and was surprised how much I am really enjoying this take on Thor.

It's almost a "What If?/Elseworlds" type of book, set in the here&now with Jane Foster working at a museum, rather than being a nurse, and Thor himself as quite young and inexperienced. On the surface, the art does appear cartoonish, but I am continually marvelling at how the facial expressions and body-poses of the characters are so real-to-life. Jane appears to be almost Jennifer Garner-ish in some panels, in a good way.

These.

Also, I really want Landridge and Samnee to do an Ant-Man book. His depiction in #3 (along with the Wasp) was probably my favourite ever.

I'd buy it, no doubt.

I really, really think people should be checking out Terry Moore's Echo. Strangers in Paradise meets Captain Atom meets The Terminator with characters and plot as rich as those in Y: The Last Man.

I'm not sure that's an endorsement for me. I'm reading the Y hardcovers and that story is dragging for me. I was expecting Y to be a fun on-the-run sci-fi adventure and I'm getting lots of heavy, serious soap opera.

I thought Y was overrated. It's bound to be a disappointment if you read it after the hype.

But notice the other elements Rawburn said went with it.

I just wrapped up Ex Machina, which concluded at issue 50. I have all the issues in combination of trades and floppies, and I'm going to sell it on eBay as a full reading set. Six volumes of trade and then about 15 issues of floppies.

PM if you'd like first crack with a serious IMWAN "no hassle" discount.

It is and I am just awaiting the final trade to complete my collection. As of now, there are no new BKV comics. :-(
