In my opinion Train just wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for Pat Monahan's wonderful lyrics and vocals, the Dave Matthews Band definitely wouldn't be the same if it didn't have Dave in it, and frankly I can't imagine anyone else singing Isaac Brock's manic lyrics for Modest Mouse.

Can't imagine Pearl Jam without Eddie Vedder, REM without Michael Stipe or Guns n Roses without Axl Rose.

So did Journey... this is supposed to be a subjective rather than objective thread, no?

Jerry Garcia - Grateful Dead
Some of the surviving members have carried on in different variations, but Jerry's death ended the band/retired the band name....(where Pigpen, Keith Godchaux and brent Mydland didn't)

Zappa without Zappa = ? The Mothers without Zappa = the Grandmothers?
Little Feat w/o Lowell Geroge = what we are stuck with now George Thorogood & the Destroyers w/o George leaves one with a nice rythmn section not much else.
Canned Heat w/o Alan Wilson or Bob Hite or Henry Vestinte is a drummer with a fill-in band
Turtles w/o Flo & Eddie leaves you not too much.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - without Alex - is all we have left
The Kink w/o Ray Davies?

Steve wrote: Can you imagine Nine Inch Nails continuing without Trent Reznor? I can't. Well, you picked a band that isn't a band there, Steve. There is no "Nine Inch Nails". Trent Reznor writes, plays, produces, and sings all of the material. He may use other musicians now in studio (and always has on tour, obviously), but NIN is one guy.

I think there's a huge amount of people who disagree with this being listed as fact. Neil Schon and Greg Rollie were the founders of the band-how in the world can you have a hard time with Schon leading the band? Without him there is no band! And I love those first three Fusion/Hard Rock albums. Also, I highly disagree with the Jon Anderson thing-Drama is one of the best Yes albums ever without him. And as far as Bad Co. goes, they had Gold and Platinum albums without Rodgers and I liked those albums-wasn't the same-wasn't supposed to be. I liked both singers that came after him although I'm glad he's back. I understand this is for fun, believe me, and I'm not mad just baffled-but that No Perry No Journey thing does not work for me. The way you list it as easy makes me feel like "Gee? I guess I'm, wrong for liking the band still. I've been duped!".
