This was an episode from the much-Darin-beloved "Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends." This was a season one episode that predated the "Incredible Hulk" cartoon that started the year after "Amazing Friends" debuted. This cartoon introduced me to Mysterio. It's also noteworthy because Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime) voiced Mysterio, Bruce Banner and the Hulk.

Why isn't this series (or the solo Spider-Man series that preceded it) not on DVD/Blu-Ray yet? I'd snap them up in a second.

This series hit right in my wheelhouse. I was already a well-established comic book fan, Spider-man was my favorite. It was like the world was conforming to me when it came out.
I was not all that happy that the "friends" were on it. That was understandable, but I just wanted Spider-man, and it felt like Firestar was made up and Iceman was a B-lister.

Yeah ditto - this was my spidey series growing up! Loved it!!
The episode where the Chameleon traps a bunch of heroes on an island was great: Spidey, Cap, Dr Strange, etc...blew my mind as a kid. As did the X-men vs the Juggernaut episode. Lots of cool guest stars on this toon.

The Spider-man series didn't precede it, they hit at about the same time. Amazing Friends was on Saturday morning, and the solo series was on in syndication. They had almost the same production values and feel (with the three-web cuts and the narration).

Interesting. Well, I want that solo Spidey series even more, it had a ton of cool guest stars.

It was better. The presence of Firestar and Iceman made the other one a little fruitier.

I've never seen these. You've got me curious.

Here's the only Youtube clip I could find of the solo Spider-man cartoon, but you can see it has the same music, voices, and those three-web cuts between scenes.

Jay mentioning that there was a syndicated solo Spider-Man show running concurrently with Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends clears up some confusion I had when I first saw this on YouTube. I'm wishing I'd gotten to see this when it was fresh... I only saw Amazing Friends.

Spidey's voice is different in this solo show.

Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends debuted in 1981, and contained Angel and Firestar, to compete with Superfriends. There were 12 episodes in season 1, 4 episodes in season 2, and 8 in season 3.
The Amazing Spider-Man solo series started in 1982, it was by the same production staff, and utilized a lot of the stuff previously used on Amazing Friends.
I own the vhs version of "Seven Little Superheroes", which also has Captain America, Dr. Strange, Sub-Mariner, and Shanna the She-Devil. The villian is the Chameleon. The X-men show up in an episode entitled "The X-Men Adventure".

I'm sorry I mixed up my X-Men/Champions. I meant Iceman.

I really like the jazzy music Sunbow/Marvel Productions used for both the "Amazing Friends" theme and the "Transformers" bumpers.

They also had probably the best theme for "The Incredible Hulk" this side of "The Lonely Man."

Those cartoons from the early 80's are what precipitated Stan's move to the west coast. I think "Stan's Soapbox" stopped around that time, and for that reason. He may have been receding before that in editorial duties, but that was the hard break.
All of that is from my best memory. I remember thinking it at the time.

I also find the episode "Spidey Goes Hollywood" charming for it's rather datedly positive perception of Hollywood as this fun and exciting place... especially with that last moment where they are yelling "hurray for Hollywood." I don't think so many people feel that way today.
