So the rights reverted back to Universal?

Tom Petty on "Geffen" Records.

I'll never understand why they didn't keep the MCA label for catalog releases.

Any speculation on the contents of the second disc?

I read recently that there will be a 5.1 surround mix included with this reissue. Maybe that's what the second disc will be.

It very well could be a live concert like the R.E.M. releases which would diminish my interest.

I would love to see a live show included.

Yeah, but not a concert. I have to be honest, I don't like the box set at all because he mixes in old shows with new. There's no cohesiveness to it.

I wouldn't. Hate live stuff.

I'd listen to it once-maybe if a concert was added on. If it's live I'll pass. It's why I didn't buy the R.E.M. remasters. At least the new R.E.M. remaster adds demos which aren't exactly essential listening, but better than a live show. The live shows should have their own release and they're usually edited to fit on the 2nd disc anyway.

I'm just the opposite I.P. I listen to live shows all the time. I listened to about half the demos, found them boring, and probably won't listen to them again.

Tom Petty has strongly hinted at the possibility a 5.1 edition of Torpedoes, such as in this interview with Sound & Vision Magazine:

http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/featur ... x-set.html

(This interview was around the time of the Live Anthology, and Petty mentioned his interest in releasing his next studio album in 5.1.
The result is the Mojo Blu-Ray!)

How about revisiting older studio material in 5.1, like, say, Damn the Torpedoes?

I think it’s possible. Damn the Torpedoes would be a great album to do it with. Obviously, my vision at the time we recorded it [in 1979] was just stereo. We recently did one of those Classic Albums documentaries for Torpedoes, where we got out the 2-inch tapes and explored them. It’s a very interesting album sonically, very well recorded. I think we’d all like to see a nice 5.1 happen for that album. I’d also like to have it available on Blu-ray. I don’t see why not.

+++

Convincing Universal may be another matter altogether, but I can't think of a better second disc for a Torpedoes deluxe edition!

I'll bite if there's unreleased live material, &/or b-sides & outtakes; if it's mainly a 5.1 surround I likely wouldn't buy it.

It is also possible that he could go with some sort of hi res edition, which may or may not interest me depending on what they choose.

Zero interest in any kind of surround or hi-rez audio here, and I'm sure the label knows this is the feeling among most people. It would have to be something live or unreleased material of very high quality to get me to dive in on this one. The Live Anthology was a fantastic set (I can't believe anyone would complain about that one, but look a few posts above . . . ) and because it mixed all eras together almost seamlessly. A live set dedicated to one album would be fine by me and would virtually guarantee a sale. Demos . . . eh, maybe a Christmas-list item, which makes it iffy. B-sides . . . aren't they all on the Playback box?

On the web site spincds.com post the track list for 2nd cd it includes 2 unreleased tracks "Nowhere" and "Surrender" early take. b-sides were already on Playback and 3 or 4 songs live 1980 on Anthology. A demo of a Casa Dega and a alternate version of a song.

There it is.

Bump: both the 2-CD set and the CD/Blu-ray set are now scheduled to be released on November 9th. See first post for updated details. Although the contents of the 2-CD set are finalised, it's unclear so far as to exactly what the CD/BD set will contain — is it the entire 2-CD Deluxe Edition plus a Blu-ray, or just the original Damn The Torpedoes album on one CD plus the Blu-ray?

also, is it blu-ray audio like Mojo?

I have this album, just not a copy of the CD ;) Now should be the time, unless there's something about the label /remaster that should prevent me from getting this.
