So I went to the eye doctor today and he wanted to do an "optimap" procedure, which involves taking pictures of the eyes. My insurance doesn't cover it, so I have to pay a premium for it. The alternative is to have my eyes dilated, which would pretty much put me out of business for the rest of the afternoon.
Getting it done involves putting your eye up to a little aperture where you can see a bright light and holding your eye wide open. Then there's a big, blinding flash. My eyes are so sensitive that I have great difficulty holding them open wide enough to get them zapped like that. I lost count of how many times they did it. The assistant who did it even put tape on one eyelid to try to hold if open.
Then the doctor said he wasn't satisfied with my results, and told the assistant to do it again! This time she used a "speculum"--basically a pair of tweezers to hold my eyes open. She kept trying to apply them and get the needed shots. Then she broke out another pair that had adhesive on them to try to stick my eyes open. Again I lost count of the attempts. Eventually the doctor said he'd be satisfied with the views he got.
Next time I might just try to schedule a late-afternoon appointment and have them dilated.

As long as the doctor takes a good look and doesn't see anything that makes it look like my eyes are going to get worse, I'm satisfied. I've got such a severe astigmatism the doctor checks me out very carefully to be sure nothing bad is happening.
