Marvel’s Runaways To Start Filming In January?
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2 ... n-january/

Production Weekly reports that Marvel plans to begin filming the adaptation of Runaways in January.

Created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, Runaways centers on six kids who discover their parents are super-villains known as the Pride. Fleeing from their homes, the kids band together to learn about their inherited powers, defeat the Pride and make up for the evil committed by their parents.

Runaways debuted in 2003 as part of Marvel’s short-lived Tsunami imprint, but was canceled after just 18 issues. The series has been relaunched and canceled two more times, under such creators as Joss Whedon, Michael Ryan, Terry Moore, Humberto Ramos, Kathryn Immonen and Sara Pichelli.

The film adaptation was announced in May 2008, with Vaughan writing the screenplay. It was reported this spring that Peter Sollett (Nick And Nora’s Infinite Playlist) was negotiating to direct, while Drew Pearce (No Heroics) had been hired to tackle the script.

Dream Cast: Who Should Star As Marvels’ Runaways
http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2 ... -runaways/

Now that it’s official that Marvel’s first true Marvel/Disney co-production – as well as first post-Avengers project – will be the much-anticipated Runaways, we’re wondering: Who should star in the movie?

It’s somewhere between obvious corporate synergy and mild contrariness, but personally, I want to see the main roles handled by various Disney Channel moppets showing if they’ve got dramatic chops past High School Musical or Jonas or whatever; give me Demi Lovato (with a dye job) as Karolina! One of the Sprouse twins as Chase! I’m running out of Disney actors I’m familiar with for the other roles, but I’d be very surprised if there’s not a good Molly Hayes somewhere in there! That said, I’d look elsewhere for Nico – Specifically, Glee‘s Jenna Ushkowitz. I have no idea why, but I think she’d be great in the role.

Meanwhile, the parents offer the best chance to get some well-known faces in the movie, and I’d look to the Harry Potter movies for guidance on how to do this properly: Character actors who can handle the required melodrama-without-overacting, and who aren’t well-known enough to overshadow the main characters in the movie – Or, alternatively, go for the geek-friendly actors who always seem to be everywhere but don’t have a permanent home these days (Why, hello, James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter as Chase’s parents. I’m sure the Buffy fans in the audience would be happy to see you).

But that’s enough about my random plans – What (and who) would you want to see heading up the Runaways movie? Fill the comments with your ideas, and hope someone from Marvel is reading.

I wonder what they're going to call it?

I think Darin is referring to the recent movie that came out called The Runaways about the Joan Jett/Cherie Currie/Lita Ford band.

I'm pretty sure if they can't call it 'Runaways', they'll go with 'Runaways: something something' (i.e. Runaways: Pride & Joy or whatever). Pretty sure they won't change the name to 'Orphans' or 'Kids of Supervillains on the Run'.

A valid question.

Not as upsetting as Cameron taking the Avatar name so that the Avatar series' movie had to be called Airbender.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Runaways" didn't appear in the main title.

I was wondering why Disney would make a movie about the Runaways, especially hot on the heels of the other one.

I'm just being a grump... BKV's Runaways was one of my favourite things of the last decade. I'd hate to see them have to rename it completely based on a movie that no one really wanted to see. In my grumpy state I took slight offense to your assumption that the name can't be used because of the unsuccessful other film*.

All that said, even renamed, it is a great property. I'd probably prefer it as a TV show but IU'll take what I can get.

*It cost $10 million and made $3.5 million (box office... likely to do a tad better on DVD). I'm pretty sure Marvel's Runaways will make much more.

I wonder if an under age (16) Dakota Fanning dressing in revealing and slutty outfits had anything to do with it?

Considering the PR for the movie was almost nil, I didn't even know that the Runaways film had even come out already, I know I would've gone to see it. :|

Probably more that most people have never heard of the band or could name a single song they did. Yes, most probably have heard of Joan Jett, but how many want to see her life story?

I say all this despite the fact that the movie clips I watched actually looked like the movie was compelling and fairly well done. I am sorta interested about the performances, but Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning both kinda bug me so I'm not sure I could watch it all the way through.

Wasn't super-heavy, but there was some PR done for it. Can't recall, but it likely opened against something bigger and then vanished quickly. Also, I really think the majority of people had little knowledge or care about the band to begin with.

The only thing that I saw promoting the Runaways was online. And that might have been in the ICE rooms. I might have seen one commercial on TV, but I really don't recall it being released.

Likely varies by market. I know it got reviewed and feature articled in the major newspapers up here. I saw a few TV ads.

No toys at McDonalds mind you.

The Runaways (band) movie was the topic of some discussion at ICE. The movie played in NYC, at least, for a couple weeks. It was actually pretty good. The DVD is being released tomorrow (7/20).

They're going in for some recasting. Joan Jett will be played by Miley Cyrus in the new movie.
