'Knocked Up''s Judd Apatow to produce Pee-Wee Herman film
Knocked Up and Superbad director Judd Apatow is producing a new Pee-Wee Herman movie, with the actor who played Herman, Paul Reubens, writing the screenplay. Apatow became interested in the project after seeing the actor perform on stage in Los Angeles.
Reubens, 57, first played Pee-Wee in The Groundlings, and had a successful TV career with the character, even starring in the 1985 Tim Burton-directed film, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.
His career nosedived in 1991 after being arrested and charged with indecent exposure in a Florida cinema, but has since been revived in recent years thanks to his stage work.
Reubens' movie comeback also includes him lending his voice to Jokey Smurf in the new animated version of The Smurfs starring Katy Perry and Neil Patrick Harris.

I'm in.
Maybe.
Probably.
Not hugely into PlayHouse, and thought Big Top Pee Wee sucked balls, but I LOVE Pee Wee's Big Adventure, so assuming it's more in the vein of that one I'll be all over this one.

When I have gone back and rewatched some of of the movies that I watched theatrically during my high school/college years (roughly 1983-1987) most of them just weren't as good as I originally thought. One notable exception was "Pee Wee's Big Adventure"-- what seemed to be an interesting, harmless comedy in 1985 has since managed to transcend the 80's and now strikes me as being an actual work of art.

I love Pee Wee Herman (and Paul Reubens). My son watched Big Top Pee Wee (his second movie) about a million times on VHS when he was a tyke. I have whole sections of that film committed to memory. Burton's film is better, of course, but Big Top is just so delightfully strange.
His TV show back in the 80s was fun and kitschy and even a bit risque.

Big adventure indeed WAS a work of art. It was excellent, as was the Playhouse. Even his cameos in the Cheech and Chong flicks were amusing. Big top wasn't that great as I remember it but maybe it might hold up a bit better in a second viewing, don't know. Regarding his indecent exposure thing, talk about rubbing one out at the wrong time, in the wrong place! I'm real sure no one else has ever done that in that place ever....

Big Top was awful from what I've seen of it. And yeah, I don't get the big deal about jacking in a porno theatre. I mean, I always thought that was the point. Or somethin. Like seriously, there are giant penises on the screen, what's the harm of one regular sized penis in the audience?
