The Vertigo Enigma series covers each contained a metallic ink, but it was tastefully done, fit the art and made for a beautiful part of my collection.

The Reign of the Supermen comics with the die-cut covers worked for me also.

I like the glow-in-the-dark ink on the Sandman special about Orpheus.

Other than those, I can't think of any of the other gimmicks that worked for me.

Gimmick covers were by and large horrible ideas.

Funny how they're so rarely used now. Multiple covers, sure, everywhere. But almost nothing on 'em. Must be because Marvel isn't owed by a trading-card company anymore.

I don't think #1 on that list really counts, since it was a spoof and supposed to be ridiculous.

I like the colorforms cover.

And that Batman/Deadman cover has nice art.

I'd like to see what it looks like when glowing.

I'm ashamed to admit I own about half of these: the Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man ones. Oh, well.

That Spidey #400 cover did not work out at all. You had to strain just to read the title on the cover.

There was a Ghost Rider glow in the dark cover that was pretty cool. Javier Saltares or Tex, maybe.

Ghost Rider #15.
Cover art was Texeira, too bad the comic was written by Mackie.

I actually liked that version of Ghost Rider, I bailed when Blevins came onboard though...

Could you take a photo of the Batman comic glowing in the dark?

A glowing variant cover? Wouldn't that be more appropriate for Captain Atom?

Solar # 10 had a black over with embossed logo. Worked for me, since that issue concluded his origin story and featured the creation of a black hole.

The final straw, I think, was a Defiant #0 issue that was comprised of trading cards. You had to collect them all and put them in 9 card pages to read the story.

I liked some of the Defiant comics. Plasm, Dark Dominion and the Goods Guys rocked.

I have the Spider-man Hologram covers(surprised they didn't clump the X-Men Hologram covers in there with them), Robin III and The Mighty Magnor #1. I'm surprised they didn't include the six random Spider-man titles that had the "Animation Cells" in them...

I bought my share of gimmicky comics in the 90's but I only have three of the ones mentioned in the article. (both Spider-Man's and Robin III)

Was The Killing Joke the first gimmicky cover with the acid green special color on the cover?

To my recollection, I've never bought a comic book with a gimmick cover. This will probably change, as my collection of Fantastic Four grows.
