Okay, so I have a sheltie. Hi is totally lovable and perfect for me since he happened to be named after a Simpson's reference. Here is the thing, he is so strong, I think he is bionic.

I don't have a fenced in yard, yet, but I will with my next house. Now we go for long walks every day and he gets a lot of play time, but I have to put him out along in the mornings while I get ready for work (he needs his potty time too). He has so far bent four stakes to unusability, the latest one a two foot piece of steel with a chain welded to the top. He has also broke four chains. I need to run to Target now to get another. At one time he had a zip line that ran from my house to my neighbors fence behind me, but Laddie almost pulled their fence down.

So do anyone have any ideas. The little guy is lieing on my feet as I type and looks so cute, it hard to believe he can go into terminator mode in seconds.

Hey Joe...maybe the solution is to have a fence company install a new fence at your new pad...ask them to specifically bury the posts into the earth (a sort of mini foundation at the base of each post) so that the fence will have resistance shooting down to the soil. Maybe steel posts as well...(this is what we do on my construction sites)...make sure the posts have at least a foot buried in the soil.

I had a dog for about 14 years..he passed away a little while ago so i know how you feel..no expense is too great.

John, I will definitly have a good fence at the new pad, but that won't be till summer. I need something for the current pad since putting a fence up isn't an option.

I thought about going with two stakes in the ground then one zip line going between them and a chain off of that. I thought it might give Laddie the greatest mobility and make it harder to pull a steak from the ground.

Now I see the problem. If there's a bunch of steaks buried in the ground, that's what's driving him crazy. Who doesn't love steak?

Joe - what you can do temporarily is attach a perpendicular piece of wood to the bottom of the stake and bury it (a reverse T if you will) this will give the stake some lateral support and the earth below will also give it strength. make sure the stake is driven through the perpendicular piece of wood and that the T is at least a foot below the soil (which is then well compacted).

Forgive my ignorance! Are the stakes you are talking about the kind that you screw into the ground? (watch it, smart asses!) Those have always worked well for me.

At the risk of being helpful (which is not my intent) the corkscrew style stakes that Greg is talking about cannot be pulled out by any earth dog. Those things could just about hold back a car. Joe, are you using the corkscrew stake? They are available in pet stores.

If you had a real pet, like a cat, then you would not need to go to such lengths to contain it. Just let it be and it will be happy.
