Shatner selling you a computer in the '80s...

Also... I remember when HBO first unveiled this Premium Intro in 1983. They used it for many years and what I liked about it was the Superman-like feeling of the camera going over the city. The city was, of course, a model and today it looks kinda fakey... but back then it knocked our socks off.

Ah, I remembered the HBO one when the music kicked in about 50 seconds into the clip! :)

Yeah, they used the full version when it was their big new movie of the month and the abridged version for most of the others. That thing is SOOOO 80's... lol

Love the music too... it goes from a sorta Superman thing to a Marcus Theaters thing...

Too funny. And we all thought how "modern" it looked!

Yeah, it's especially dated where the actors in the window blend with the model footage... traveling matte technology from back then didn't age well.

A friend of mine had about six hours of MTV from 1983 recorded on three old vhs tapes that had never been watched and we found them a couple of years ago when I helped him clean out his parents' attic. See, he had a sister who was about 5 years older than him and she did a year of school in England when she was in high school. MTV was still a relatively new thing in 1983 and it was all anybody in our age group watched. She called her folks and asked if they would send her a tape of MTV so she could watch it, as for some reason she couldn't see it there. Her dad didn't know how the speeds worked on VCRs and instead of recording six hours on a single tape, he recorded two hours on the really high quality setting on each of 3 tapes. She later called back and told her dad not to bother sending the tapes because VCRs in Europe use a different format. So the tapes rested in a box unwatched in a closet in an attic until 2008. Finding them was like finding a historical archive. My friend and I watched the tapes and totally tripped out. Music news, the ads, the videos... it was like being in a time warp. Reagan was referenced at least once. My friend decided to take the tapes and transfer them digitally onto a dvd.

Anyway, one of the ads that kept bombarding us as we watched classic MTV was this one from Vidal Sassoon...

When the hurricanes come and we're without cable and internet access, the kids love to watch our old VHS timeshift tapes from the 80's and 90's. Mostly for the commercials. Anything prior to 2005 is nostalgia for them.

A favorite of mine is my tape of Ron Mann's Comic Book Confidential on The Discovery Channel back around '89 or '90. It has a good mix of commercials from the time.

This isn't a commercial, but I wanted to share it. During my sophomore year in high school (1989-90), there was a one-season wonder tv show that I just loved. It was a spin-off of Fox's "21 Jump Street" called "Booker." It was about a former Jump Street cop named Dennis Booker (Richard Grieco) who, after essentially being fired from his cop job, went to work as an private investigator for the fictitious Teshima Corporation. I used to try to make my hair look like his and I even saved up to get a leather jacket (though not the biker one he had). I laugh at it now, but at the same time I remember how cool the opening to the show seemed to me...

When you're a kid something about the neat way they're packaged and the way they can be heated up so readily makes TV dinners seem so cool and fun. As an adult--well, the best you can say is they're convenient. I try not to fall into the habit of eating frozen nuked stuff too often.
