On a similar note, I've heard that Sorrows will be reissued on CD sometime this summer. If you're not familiar, Sorrows evolved from The Poppees, and their two albums, especially "Teenage Heartbreak", are considered essentials in the pop/power pop genre.

This is most welcome news! Became aware of the Poppees (and Boyfriends) after discovering those two Sorrows LPs (and that's equally great news about the upcoming official cd release of those - ready and willing to upgrade my needle-drops, which have been cleaned up pretty nicely in any case).
Found out about the Japan only cd comp of Poppees and Boyfriends recordings, and even though it was long out of print, i stubbornly did frequent eBay searches on it, and after months a UK seller had it listed, still sealed no less. I figured for sure i'd be outbid by someone paying a "collectables" price for it, but somehow got very lucky and paid about $20 for it. Great music, though it did turn out to be all vinyl needledrops (uncleaned), so i have a self-cleaned up version of it as well.
But this one shall be the icing on the cake. Thanks for the heads up!

Well, no major spoilers here, but mine arrived today and it's all i'd hoped for and more. 40 minutes of something-something heaven. Arthur Alexander's liner notes are fantastic, origins of all 18 tracks are explained nicely. Just an amazing piece of, er, music history, great music.
While trolling around the net on these guys, i ran into another Japan cd from them (i had thought that the "Lost Treasures" Poppees/Boyfriends comp had been the only one), from 2007 on the Vivid label, called "Power Pop Gems and Live at the 82 Club". Even assuming any studio stuff would also be on this new anthology, i do know for sure that there are no live tracks on it from "The 82 Club", so it's got my imagination running wild -especially after hearing the live material on this cd. It's listed for sale at Tower, Amazon, and a couple of Japanese web sites, from $32-40, but i can't find any specifics on it anywhere (track list).
I'm hoping that Charles, Linda or Melodyman might know something about this.

Didn't know it existed until you mentioned it, Rick! But one site says that the "Live At The 82 Club" tracks are taken from a 1976 gig. I assume those are the last 7 or 8 tracks which appear to include a bunch of covers, and a couple of titles match the "Live At The 82 Club" tracks on Bomp's anthology. And I'll guess that the "Power Pop Gems" are early demos. So this would be a must-have no matter how poor the sound quality might be.

Thanks so much for the details, Linda. And i'm 100% in agreement with your last remark - so, who'll snag it first before it goes OOP?? On your marks; get set - GO! Thanks again!

Well, from what i can find so far this seems to either be
a) long out of print, or
b) a release which was pending but never actually came out.
The inability to find it actually attainable anywhere at all, not even as an outrageously priced collectable, nor discussed or reviewed anywhere on the internet, leads me to lean toward option b. And for me, that would be the more merciful of the two....
I know it was mentioned that the Sorrows LPs are coming out on cd, and one remark i read on, i think, their myspace page, was that this Bomp cd would be followed by a new album by the Sorrows (hopefully, in addition to reissues). That bit of news/rumor (if it is indeed true) was startling!

In my best Lilly Von Schtook voice; "It's twuuu, it's twuuuuu!"
Linda, thank you very much for those video links, both the recent and those two vintage ones. Superb!
Your lack of remark towards the first part of my previous post would lead me to believe that you may be extending some mercy towards me. I've emailed two vendors who supposedly can get that Japan cd, no replies so far. It's never referred to on any Poppees or Boyfriends web pages, so this one's a real mystery....

Wow! Linda, you're unbelievable - thanks so much for that link, i never would've known to pursue this avenue, and it appears to have worked (ordering). My ears are tingling with anticipation!
Been listening to "Lost Treasures" and the 2 Sorrows LPs here at work. I gotta say, that The Boyfriends have some decent tracks, but compared to the Sorrows, i'd have to say that the best of the promise seen in the Poppees music was far more realized with the Sorrows over the Boyfriends. But, as they say, "it's all good".

They're out of stock now, which means that all the Sorrows fans on Earth (all four of us reading this thread ) ordered that CD today.
Hey Rick, you weirded me out a little with your comment about the videos. I initially was going to post the two vintage Sorrows clips that YouTube has, but didn't, and decided that the reunion video was more appropriate to the point you'd made. Yet you thanked me for linking to all three videos! Reading my mind?
Anyway, here are the two vintage ones. I'm pretty sure I attended this gig. (At Hurrah, my favourite club of all time.) If not this one, then at The Ritz around the same time.

Linda, sorry to have weirded you out, although we share some enthusiasm for some relatively obscure bands, i have not yet attempted any long distance vulcan mind melds or any other methods to extract information pertaining to a certain unspoken sub-genre of music. Thankfully, you've always come through for me the old-fashioned way, right here in this forum.
What did happen, though, was when i clicked the You Tube link for the reunion, there appeared a little film strip type thing on which you could scroll to the right. So there was a row of mini-links superimposed on the regular link. There were a total of about 15 or so of these mini-links in the strip; both reunion songs, both of those links just above, and numerous songs from other bands, including DMZ (pre-Lyres), which sort of surpirsed me. I can't remember the names of the other groups, but most of them seemed to be 80's contemporaries of the Sorrows.
I know that when i've clicked some other You Tube links here at IMWAN the same thing has happened, with this row of mini links showing up. I'll have to go back and click it again to see if it still happens.
Any other folks here seen what i'm referring to?
But if i ever do cultivate all of my latent psychic abilities, and if the phone in your mind rings and the call begins with "Long Live P&#$r P@p aka real songs played on real instruments by real men who drink real ale", you'll know it's me!

There is a comment thread off of one of the Anthology reviews on Amazon. Arthur Alexander takes part in it and confirms Sorrows stuff for August
Thanks for that link, Charles. Arthur refers to it as the first ever Sorrows cd, leaving it still uncertain to me whether it's a reissue or new recordings. Oh well. Either way, we win! Big time.
Oh, and Linda, i went back to that You Tube link and clicked it again, this time that little film-strip thing of mini links did not appear. So i'm not sure what the deal was with that.

No problem, Rick, I know exactly what you mean about the little links at the bottom of the video. It was just the way you originally phrased it, and the fact that I'd nearly posted the two old vids but didn't, that freaked me out.
P.S. It's okay to say "Power Pop". I just get cynical when a band describe themselves that way. Pretty limiting.

Yeah, I was a bit nervous when he replied (I was the one on Amazon who asked Arthur Alexander about the Sorrows reissue) about the "first" Sorrows release on CD, so hopefully, he wasn't being intentionally vague and meant it was going to be all new recordings. That would be a huge disappointment.
Edit: The more I think about it, considering, evidently, Sorrows has reformed (with how many original members I haven't a clue) and their recent performance video, and the fact that Arthur Alexander's phrasing of "first ever Sorrows CD" (not being specific of even mentioning 'Teenage Heartbreak'), the cynic in me leads me to now think that he was hinting at only a CD of new material. We'll see.

Linda, thanks again for that Amazon Japan link. I ordered it Thursday 5/27 and it arrived yesterday 6/1. Although not the fastest shipping ever from Japan for me, it's a close 2nd place. No spoiling here, just to say i'm not disappointed at all. Very glad to have gotten one while it was still possible - Thanks Again!
