From Yahoo & Reuters:

"By Emily Chasan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Warner Music Group Corp's Atlantic Records label on Thursday sued two members of the alternative rock band Stone Temple Pilots for trying to end their recording contract early.

The suit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan claims lead singer Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz have threatened to stop performing under their contract and have indicated they would like to end the agreement unless Atlantic makes significant changes.

The record company said in the suit that while Stone Temple Pilots have already delivered six albums, it wants the group to record a seventh album and deliver up to two more albums if the record label decides they want them.

The group, known for hits like "Sex Type Thing" and "Interstate Love Song," rose to fame in the 1990s and reunited last month for their first national tour in eight years.

The group, whose momentum was often curtailed by Weiland's drug problems, had fallen apart shortly after a 2002 tour. In late 2003, the other two members of the group, guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo, were released by Atlantic from their recording contract as they said they wanted to pursue separate careers.

Atlantic said in the lawsuit that the group -- Weiland, Kretz and the DeLeos -- was now touring successfully and had indicated its intention to record together again.

The record company said its contract with Stone Temple Pilots was written under New York laws and that the musicians are trying to use California laws to terminate it.

Atlantic said claims by Kretz and Weiland that they have a right to terminate the contract "have given rise to a definite, real and substantial controversy between the parties that threatens to harm Atlantic's business."

Atlantic is seeking a court declaration of its rights under the recording contract, the costs of its legal fees and any other relief the court decides is appropriate.

A spokeswoman for Stone Temple Pilots had no immediate comment on the lawsuit."

Stone Temple Pilots set to record new album
Frontman Scott Weiland also says there will be a 'long tour'

October 29, 2009

Stone Temple Pilots have revealed their plans to record a new album.

The follow-up to 2001's 'Shangri-La Dee Da', the band's sixth studio album is expected some time in 2010.

"When we get back [from tour], we're going to finish the album," singer Scott Weiland told Spinner. "Then, when we finish the album, there will be a big tour around its release and that will probably be a long tour."

Currently on a North American tour the as-yet-untitled album is expected to be released next spring or summer, although contractual disputes between the group and Atlantic Records are said to be ongoing.

The new album is self titled (can't they come up with an actual name?) and will be out May 25. Love these guys, hope it's a good one!

From Anti-Music.com:

Stone Temple Pilots have officially announced their comeback album details. We now learn that it is a self-titled effort and the June 1st release date that leaked out yesterday was off by a week. You'll be getting the album a week earlier!

Here is the official word from the STP camp, including the tracklisting: STP fans, brace yourselves for the brand new Stone Temple Pilots album, set to release on May 25th!

Here's an exclusive, first look at the track listing from the self-titled album:
1) Between the Lines
2) Take a load off
3) Huckleberry Crumble
4) Hickory Dichotomy
5) Dare if You Dare
6) Cinnamon
7) Hazy Daze
8) Bagman
9) Peacoat
10) Fast as I can
11) First Kiss on Mars
12) Maver

I wonder what label it's going to be on? Or is it self-released?

I too can't wait! Stone Temple Pilots is my favorite '90s band.

Can't wait also. Possibly the most underrated band of the '90s. They were always called knockoffs, but I always found their style original, especially from Purple onward. Wonder if this will be in more of the style they were going toward with Tiny Music?

I believe this album will be coming out domestically on Atlantic Records.

It comes out in four days but the local alternative rock station hasn't been playing a thing from it. Compare to Godsmack's or Alice in Chains' latest which got airplay for a month leading up to it. This is a bad sign.

Steve:
No fears-the song is tearing up radio. It's been #1 on Billboard for 4 weeks at Album Rock and #2 at Alternative Rock.
Couldn't be any bigger. I don't even listen to the radio and I hear it every day passing by. The video is also Top 10 at MTV2.
If your station isn't playing it, they should be off the air.
They also kicked ass on Letterman playing the song the other night.

Despite posting the link, I haven't heard it yet. At one time I owned their entire catalog, but over time all but the 1st album & a couple songs on the second haven't aged well for me.

The band's official website indicates yet another variation, a pre-sale only CD that includes two unspecified bonus tracks.

As of right now (Sunday), it looks like both the BB and Target deluxe versions will have the following bonus tracks:

Samba Nova
Vasoline [Live from Chicago]
Hickory Dichotomy [Live from Chicago]
Between the Lines [Live from Chicago]

iTunes also shows a 30-minute interview and another pre-order only track, "About a Fool". The Target release may be the only way to get "About a Fool" on CD, but since that likely won't be known until Tuesday fans may still want to get on the iTunes pre-order before then...

There seem to be three types of STP fans:

1) Those who like Core and Purple and think the rest is pretty much garbage
2) Those who like some parts of Core and Purple, but who primarily like the music from Tiny Music onward
3) The diehards who like everything.

If you're in group 1, this CD is not for you.

I come from group 2, and I think this CD is fantastic. I actually think the single Between The Lines might be the worst song on the CD, while the best tune - and one of the best STP cuts ever - is Dare If You Dare. The CD has all sorts of trippy cuts Hickory Dichotomy, Bagman and Maver. Dean is tremendous throughout, once again showing why he is one of the most underrated musicians in rock music and, in my view, the best studio guitar arranger since Jimmy Page (who he thanks in the liner notes).

It's just a great hard rock album with all sorts of great vocal harmonies, intricate melodies, etc. I love how this band has aggression and attitude in their music, but they never stray from melody and pop influence.

The best thing about the CD is that it's 41 minutes. I got it for something like $10.30 at Best Buy. STP gets it. I think one of the reasons why the quality of music has suffered in the CD era is that too many artists put too much filler on their CD's. I know the reason why LPs used to be around 40 minutes was because if you put much more on than that, the sound would suffer, but I also feel that it's almost in the genetic code of album making that once you go past 47 minutes, things go downhill except in rare instances like Electric Ladyland and Tommy. From Tiny Music onward, STP has done an outstanding job of making albums that play well from beginning to end. I wish more artists would follow their path.
