Note that the above release, complete with the same bonus tracks and updated artwork, was released as a hybrid SACD back in 2004, and has been out of print for several years:
The new redbook release in the first post might be a brand-new remix of this material, as noted in the JSP label's description, but they might instead simply be referring to the 2004 mix from the redbook layer of the SACD.

Can you believe I still have an email saved from John Stedman from JSP from back in 2004 when the SACD came out? I emailed him again just now, assuming he has the same email address. I asked if this is another remix or the same as the SACD. I'll let you know if I get a reply.
I'd like to see Phil Guy's JSP stuff rerelased. Why not? He relatively recently passed away, might be nice to put out a box set of his stuff. Brother Buddy did play guitar on some of his JSP stuff too.

Wow, that was quick! I got a reply from John Stedman of John Stedman Productions (JSP). Here is what he had to say:
Hi Dave
It's the stereo version from the SACD of course, I thought we had hit perfection with that one!! The SACD was hardly more than a limited edition as that format foundered(for me at least).
We recently did the It's A Real Mutha on Phil Guy JSP8823 the full original Chicago studio set from 1985 plus the BBC Radio session from the following year and one of those play on computer video clips taken from a local TV thing from around about that period.

On a "related" note, John Stedman confirmed that the Phil Guy re-release (It's A Real Mutha, JSP 8823) IS a never before released remix. I was thinking Buddy played on some of those tracks, but I might be wrong.

I've just started getting into Buddy Guy. To you BG fans: please let me know your top three recommendations. I already have the Buddy's Blues comp from Chess and like it a lot. Thanks.

I'm not the most reliable BG source - I tend towards the later stuff. Just about anything w/Junior Wells isn't bad, but I really like "Damn Right I've Got The Blues" and "Feels Like Rain".
If you get a chance, go to YouTube and search for Buddy Guy and Experience PRS - he was a surprise guest last year w/Carlos Santana. BG was killer. The first time I saw him was w/Junior Wells in about 1990, opening for John Mayall. BG tore the place up - absolutely blew the place away. To my shame, I didn't know who he was that night - but I thought he was about 25 years old.

His early stuff is really good. Try " I left My Blues In San Francisco, A Man And His Blues," and especially "Hoodoo Man Blues " by Jr. Wells. Raw, gritty Chicago blues.

JG--I'm a huge Buddy Guy fan, seen him live a couple of times and had him autograph a book and a few cd singles for me. What you would actually like from him depends on your musical leanings--do you like the older blues sound better or more contemporary blues? MY top choices are:
1. Skin Deep: His most recent cd and the best one he's ever done IMO. Guests Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks and they actually add to the music and aren't just there for marketing purposes. 2. Damn Right I've Got The Blues: His "comeback" album, great versions of the title track and "Five Long Years." 3. Slippin' In: Solid release 4. Playlist: this is a surprisingly good cross-section of Buddy's work and includes a couple off of Skin Deep.
If you get a chance, see him live at a blues club, he's easily approachable as are most blues performers, some of them you can sit down next to at the bar. He still never finishes "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)--I asked him why once via an online chat and he said he didn't realize that until I asked...lol. You might get lucky and see him take a walk out into the street or into the men's room while still playing, he uses an extra long cord to plug into his guitar, a trick he learned from Magic Sam back when they would have duels in the Chicago blues clubs to see who could win some drinking money. The best testimonial I can give for Buddy is Hendrix used to go see him and record his licks and Buddy would let him, there's even footage on you tube of this.

Try "A Man and the Blues", his debut on Vanguard after leaving Chess. He was finally able to open up and let loose. I wouldn't immediately recommend any of his own Chess recordings for starters, but I do love his guitar work on Muddy Waters' Folk Singer album. Can't go wrong with anything he did with Junior Wells! Hoodoo Man Blues is great, as is Alone And Accoustic. of his recent work, Sweet Tea comes to mind as a favorite. No guests involved and I like the tougher grittier sound. Also, check out something on the JSP label! DJ Play My Blues is top notch Buddy Guy! Ask me tomorrow and I might give you different answers as I have everything he's done and love it all.

Oh yeh! Try Southside Blues Jam, another great Junior Wells album featuring Buddy. And if ever in Chicago in January, stop down at Legends and catch him live. I've lost count, but I catch him every year at his club. And his new club opens one block away this Summer! Looking forward to it!
