DEVO have announced the release of their first studio album since 1990, scheduled to come out next fall.
The as-yet untitled record will be the band’s first since 'Smooth Noodle Maps', and follows the 2007 single 'Watch Us Work It', their first new song in 18 years.
The five-piece are also due to appear at SXSW this year, including a one-night-only concert at the Austin Music Hall on March 20.
On May 6 they will perform their 1978 debut album 'Q: Are We Not Men, We Are Devo!' in its entirety at London's Kentish Town Forum.
The tour dates are as follows:
Dallas, TX Palladium Ballroom (March 18) Austin, TX Austin Music Hall (20) London, UK Kentish Town Forum (May 6) Somerset, UK Butlins Holiday Centre (8)
DEVO previewed several songs from their first new studio album in 19 years at their showcase SXSW performance at the Austin Music Hall last night (March 20).
Wearing their trademark haz-mat jump suits and red cone hats, the veteran new wave band worked the crowd into a frenzy by playing several old favourites including 'Peek-A-Boo', 'Whip It' and 'Girl U Want'.
The band were accompanied by an elaborate video display that showed the band's body parts at various unflattering angles.
The band displayed tremendous energy when debuting new tracks from the album due out this autumn, which were relatively heavy on guitars and light on synthesisers compared to their previous material.
They concluded the night by throwing several red cone hats into the audience.
DEVO played:
'Don’t Shoot, I’m A Man' (new song) 'Peek-A-Boo' 'What We Do' (new song) 'Going Under' 'Fresh' (new song) 'That’s Good' 'Girl U Want' 'Whip It' 'Secret Agent Man' '(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction' 'Uncontrollable Urge' 'Mongoloid' 'Smart Patrol'/'Mr. DNA' 'Gates Of Steel' 'Devo Corporate Anthem' 'Freedom Of Choice' 'Jocko Homo' 'Gut Feeling' 'Beautiful World'
DEVO are to perform at the official 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
The new wave band, who have recently been working on new material produced by Santigold, will play at the Whistler Medals Plaza venue on February 22, with the performance set to be broadcast on NBC.
Speaking about the gig, bandmember Jerry Casale said he was "really excited to have the opportunity to let everyone know that De-evolution is real!"
Singer Mark Mothersbaugh, writing under his alias Booji Boy Oxo, hinted that fans could expect to hear new material from the band at the gig.
"Now, more than ever before, it is time to disobey the mob and think for ourselves," he explained, adding that the band are aiming "to remind people that biology is destiny, and De-evolution is real! We are back with inspirational tomes of truth and neuro-simpatico sonic nuggets for the entire world, not just our species!"
DEVO's performance is part of the Whistler Victory Ceremonies, which runs from February 13-27 and features the likes of Feist, Usher and The Fray. For more information, see http://www.vancouver2010.com.
The 2010 Winter Olympic Games run from February 12-28.

Devo plan comeback album through focus group For their first LP in 20 years, the new wave band are working in consultation with 'content consumers'. We think they mean 'fans'

(Photograph: Jim Dyson/Getty Images)[/caption] Devo's first album in 20 years is to be determined by focus group. The de-evolved new wave band will choose their new record's songs, instrumentation, and even the colour of their "power dome" hats, in consultation with the public.
"In the spirit of trying to bring the best possible content to a world that seems to be reaching a boiling point, Devo wants to know what you, the hairy content consumers, really think," explained Greg Scholl, the "CEO" of Devo Inc. "[We have] initiated a series of studies to help the band determine every decision it makes regarding its body coverage, its brand colour, its graphic icons and even its choice of vocal, style and instrumentation on any given song."
Prior to last night's performance at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Devo's Gerald Casale explained the concept to the Los Angeles Times. "It's an art experiment," he said. "The experiment is the business of art. It's always there, but nobody ever talks about it." Besides working on consultations with the marketing firm Los Angeles Mother, the band have announced a major merchandise, tour and album deal with Warner Music.
"It's just fun to use business as part of the creative process, even if it's satirical," Casale said. Devo plan to put the whole process online, revealing all of the focus groups' decisions. "People will see what happened, and then we'll also put out bonus tracks of the non-focus-group-approved music," he explained. "For anyone who is interested, we'd like to let them examine this as an open book. Here's our first demos, and here's the songs that never reached anybody, and here's the ones the focus group didn't like."
In recording the album, Devo turned to a variety of producers who have been influenced by the band. These included Santigold, the Dust Brothers' John King, and Greg Kurstin, who plays with the Bird and the Bee. "[We wanted to understand] their idea of Devo," Casale said.
"Devo has remarked that the typical artist feels 'special' because he or she invents his own world and sticks to it," Scholl said in his mock-infomercial. "Instead, the band feels it's much more special actually to listen to others' ideas and feelings and take them into account."
"Devo is real now," Casale said. "Devo is not ahead of its time. Devo is not scary or shocking ... We're the house band on the Titanic, and we're here to entertain as we all go down."
The as yet untitled album will be released in May.

I was excited about this until I saw the tracklisting. It doesn't follow the focus group, including some of the worst songs ("Cameo?" Ugh...) and leaving off (of course) "Watch Us Work It," the reason I got excited in the first place. I'm now convinced that the whole "focus group" thing was bullshit in the first place.
"88% focus group approved" tracklist (from clubdevo.com) 1. Fresh 2. What We Do 3. Please Baby Please 4. Don't Shoot (I'm a Man) 5. Mind Games 6. Human Rocket 7. Sumthin' 8. Step Up 9. Cameo 10. Later Is Now 11. No Place Like Home 12. March On
Songs selected by "Song Study" (from wikipedia) "Watch Us Work It" "Fresh" "Sumthin" "Don't Shoot (I'm A Man)" "Step Up" "Signal Ready" "What We Do" "Please Baby Please" "Let's Get To It" "Mind Games" "Later is Now" "Human Rocket"
Songs not chosen by "Song Study" "Knock Boots" "March On" "Cameo" "No Place Like Home"

So if they release one single with 4 songs, problem solved -- everything will be released. Plus you have to imagine that there will be retailer exclusive editions with a bonus disc and such.
DEVO have told NME that part of the reason for them releasing their first new album since 1990 is because their concept of de-evolution is currently "more real than ever".
The maxim, which proposes that mankind is regressing rather than progressing, has been a staple part of the band's outlook since they formed in 1972. Speaking ahead of the release of new album 'Something For Everybody' on June 15, the band's Gerry Casale says he feels it is only being proven to be true now.
"It was now or never. DEVO is all still here and, since de-evolution seems to be more real than ever, it seemed like the time," he explained. "We're as relevant as any band out there today. We're not shocking anymore and we're not ahead, we're of our time now, more or less."
Casale added: "It's just real now, we live in it. It's like admitting global warming as a prophesy fulfilled. By admitting it then you can move on. Yes, de-evolution is real. It wasn’t just a crackpot joke and it isn’t a shocking claim."
He also explained why the band decided to enlist Santigold as one of 'Something For Everybody''s producers.
"We made a conscious decision early on to do the one thing we never did, which was collaborate and involve the outside world – producers, professionals, consumers, opinion-makers," Casale said.
"Working with Santi and other people, we enjoyed it. We were going to work with Al Doyle from Hot Chip and James Murphy from LCD [Soundsystem] but they were both making records and it became impossible, schedule-wise. But it was really fun to watch what somebody else who cites DEVO as an influence thinks DEVO should sound like. She was interested and we like what she does, so it was perfect, it was mutual respect and admiration."
Meanwhile, Casale confirmed that the band are planning to visit the UK for live dates this August, though he is unsure whether the "concepts" he has in mind for the shows will come into fruition.
"It all comes down to money – if I had Lady GaGa's money you'd see all the concepts," he explained. "Certainly we'll do whatever we can within the parameters of budget and the live shows will be unfolding as the album is released. In terms of the UK I don't think we'd be there until late fall."
