The title of the thread is just my oh-so-clever pun. AFAIK there's been no Superman arc called this ... yet. :)

Somebody posted the cover of the new Action Comics, so I thought I'd try out both Action and the main Superman title. It's been years since I read either. I found them both to be impenetrable ... no way for me, as a "new" reader, to figure out what was going on in either title. Action said it was part of a storyline called "World Against Superman" and Superman said it was part of "Last Stand Of New Krypton", and both issues referred to another miniseries at the end, and I didn't feel an urge to start reading that miniseries. :?

Are these good storylines that I just don't have enough info to enjoy, or are they truly impenetrable? Honestly, I don't see how anyone could try out either of these titles right now and become Superman fans.

That is a microcosm of why I quit reading DC completely. It started with Infinite Crisis and has gotten worse and worse. And worse. :)

Superman comics without Superman in them. Yeah, I never even bothered to crack a cover. I was thinking about picking up Straczynski's run but apparently the long story arc is Superman traveling the country and trying not to use his powers, thus somehow regaining the public's trust. Is it really so hard to have Superman in his comic in costume fighting a super-villain? Why is DC afraid of that?

Well "Last Stand of Krypton" is Superman (with Supergirl, Superboy and the Legion) in costume fighting Brainiac (with Lex Luthor) and I don't think it's impenetrable at all. I assume that Superman #700 would be the good jumping on point though as it follows after Last Stand of New Krypton, or this Saturday's War of the Supermen #0 would probably be even better since it's part of Free Comic Book Day.

It really does suck-- I was really enjoying Superman before all this happened. Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek, and Grant Morrison on All Star-- it was a Superman fan's dream.

Then after Brainiac, it all fell apart and I quit Superman. :sigh:

No, not at all. They are very easy to understand. Provided you have read about 4 or 5 Superman titles a month for the past 3 years. Oh, and several tie-ins. And Adventure Comics. And for the LoSH appearances Legion of Three Worlds and The Lighting Saga arc in JLA might help.

Not impenetrable at all.

Those were the days, weren't they? I remember thinking "This is so awesome! I give DC about a year before the manage to FUBAR it"

And they didn't disappoint.

Outside of his Green Lantern (which I really, really like and made Hal one of my favorite characters) and his pre-relaunch JSA, no, not at all.

I loved Up, Up, and Away, but I give credit for that to Busiek.

I like some of his stuff-- I thought Last Son, Legion of Superheroes, and Brainiac were all killer.

Oh, and I'm not sure about Secret Origin. But then again, I doubt I will be satisfied with a retelling of Superman's origin unless I write it myself.

This is why I wait for trades and find out beforehand if I have to read any other books to understand them.

If the answer is yes, then I don't get the trade.

I remember reading a five-issue Amazing Spider-Man storyline involving the Green Goblin from the late seventies and thinking that it was a long-ass story. Good, but longer than any storyline I'd ever read up to that point.

It was ahead of its time.

When Superman goes back to normal, I'll start reading it again. Even if it's awesome, I don't want to collect all those fucking titles every month.

Things will probably settle after the whole New Krypton War thing that's supposed to happen in June, I think it is? Maybe July? What month was the last solicitation for?

(In other words, like Noto said... around issue #700.)
