FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 1, 2010 Printable Version Zappa Records To Release 'Greasy Love Songs' CD May 1 Celebrating 1968's 'Cruising With Ruben And The Jets'
Another Anniversary Frank Zappa Audio Documentary project/object celebrating Zappa's 'Cruising With Ruben and The Jets.' The Doo Wop and Pachuco references mark this as Zappa's homage to the music and culture of his teenage world in 1950's Southern California. Contains Original 1968 Vinyl Stereo Mix, Interviews and Related Rarities.
"This is an album of greasy love songs cretin simplicity," says Zappa in the original liner notes for the album he produced in 1968. "We made it because we really like this kind of music (just a bunch of old men with rock and roll clothes on sitting around the studio mumbling about the good old days)." Joe Travers calls this release a "UMRK (Utility Muffin Research Kitchen) Boss First" - the original stereo mix, the original release.
'Greasy Love Songs' is due out May 1st on Zappa Records. Yes. The digipak is made from Metalyzed Polyester foil paper.
Among additional tracks included are alternate mono mixes, an unreleased cover of "Valerie" which enjoyed heavy rotation in the Mothers' concerts circa 1967 and a version of "Love of My Life" from Studio Z, bringing this CD from 40 minutes in the vinyl release to well over an hour of "the stuff of teen-age legend," according to Gail Zappa's text. "The thrall, the threnodies, the three and four part harmonies, the keys to the kingdom of sociological and panchromatic sexual edification." The package, #3 in the FZ Audio Documentary Series, also contains Cheech Marin's highly evocative liner notes recalling his 1968 audition for Zappa.
The Mothers of Invention per Frank Zappa's original liner notes on 'Cruising With Ruben and The Jets':
Ray Collins: lead vocals Frank Zappa: low grumbles, oo-wah lead guitar Roy Estrada: high weazlings, dwaedy-doop electric bass Jimmy Carl Black and/or Arthur Dyer Tripp III: lewd pulsating rhythm Ian Underwood or Don Preston: redundant piano triplets Motorhead Sherwood: baritone sax tambourine Bunk Gardner and Ian Underwood: tenor alto saxes

Thanks for the heads up on this one, Robert. Now that this is coming, along with the Freak Out MOFO and Lumpy Money previous releases, my Zappa "want list" is complete. Looking forward to this.

Ruben & the Jets is a must for me, that and Strictly Commercial. I don't know the rest of the catalog well enough, must sample from the local library.

In America it seems that library CD selections are random at best, at least in the places I've lived. For instance, one library I used to visit had a fairly large jazz collection but it was filled with little-known contemporary artists and precious few classics. They had T.S. Monk but nothing by his famous dad Thelonious.
I'm not a Zappa fanatic but i'd love to hear more of his stuff. If my local library had a good Zappa collection I'd be all over it.

First, anyone know the status of the Zappa/Ryko catalog?
Second, I don't know about "must have," but the ones I have (besides MOFO and Lumpy Money) are Imaginary Diseases and the Dub Room Special soundtrack. The latter has the PBS session from 1974 (from which the LP version of "Inca Roads" is mostly derived).

Indeed. The best library selection I've ever seen? Wheaton, Il...near Wheaton Bible College. Elvis Costello boxes! Bowie RCAs! Ryuichi Sakamoto's entire output! The hell?
Anyway, see if your library will interlibrary loan...

I'd consider "Joe's Garage", "You Are What You Is", "Zoot Allures", "Zappa In New York", "Hot Rats", "Lather" and at least one of "Fillmore East" or "Just Another Band From LA". I'm a bit torn on which 1988 tour release ("The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life", "Broadway The Hard Way" or "Make A Jazz Noise Here") to recommend, but that was my favorite Zappa band (their version of "Stairway To Heaven" and the Swaggart medley are must-hears). I'd also give strong recs to "Sheik Yerbouti" and the "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" series.
Aw, just buy 'em all - cheaper than a Paul Stanley guitar and better for you!
Alan

IMO - all are MUST buys - all on CD - whatever you can find on vinyl, tape or even 8-track.
Only Money, Lumpy Gravy, Lumpy Money, Ruben, Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka, Uncle Meat, Weasels, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Imaginary Diseases, all the 88 band's stuff, SUNPYG, Freak Out, Absolutely Free, Apostrophe('), The entire Stage set, New York and JABFLA are the foundation from which to build.

Top notch release - Worth the price for Cheech Martin's audition story alone.
Great graphics - great packaging (glad I got an extra copy - gonna keep it sealed. Early pics of all our teen age idols...
Valarie is not live - it is an out-take from WOIIFTM JRGD (mono) NNN (long version) SUTC (6:05) JRGD (single version) LOML (62-64?) 2 interviews from the time period
This is a MUST release...more stuff like this...please! Hot Rats, Uncle Meat...the 12 record set...Absolutely Free...

This thing is fucking fantastic. Why couldn't the original 1995 CD have been like this? All, joyousness. I would've loved even more, but I'm happy with what I have.

You've said it all! I've had a cleaned up needle drop of the original vinyl (which my cousin did) for some years now, as like most old Zappa fans i couldn't stand his reworking of this (that horrid 1995 cd), which has sufficed nicely...until this! To hear this original mix in such digital splendor, just, well, just about brings a tear to my eyes. The bonus tracks are mostly great, and i would've bought this just for the alternate mix of Jelly Roll Gum Drop alone - stunningly good. With MOFO, Lumpy Money, and now this, hats off to ZFT for the excellent job on everything so far, giving his brilliant early works the proper reverence. The "Joe's .....age" series has been nice also.
