Leonard Nimoy To Retire From Acting

Image

Leonard Nimoy is to retire from acting.

The 79-year-old star - who is most famous for the role of Spock in the 'Star Trek' TV show and movies - says he will not appear in the next 'Star Trek' movie and will take a back seat so Zachary Quinto, who took over the character in 2009, can continue in the role.

He said: "I've been doing this professionally for 60 years. I love the idea of going out on a positive note. I've had a great, great time.

"I want to get off the stage. Also, I don't think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto. He's a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it's time to give him some space. And I'm very flattered the character will continue."

Despite his retirement from acting, Nimoy admits he is grateful he got to revive the role of the Vulcan first officer in 'Star Trek'.

He told the Toronto Sun newspaper: "Since JJ Abrams revived the 'Star Trek' franchise, I felt I owed him something. And I'm glad I did it because he promised me a good story, and it was."

Recently Zachary promised he would attempt to get Nimoy to come back to the sequel to the movie.

He said: "I think I might have to ask him this time. Every time JJ calls I pick up in a heartbeat. I assure you that. And when it's to tell me to come to work I'll be there."

Other than Trek, Mission Impossible and a few notable directing efforts, what has he done?

He's recorded five albums and published seven books of poety, as well as a book of photographs--"The Full Body Project".

Quote:
In his provocative new book, photographer and actor Leonard Nimoy captures images of full-bodied women, some of whom are involved in what is known as the “fat acceptance” movement. “The average American woman,” Nimoy writes, “weighs 25 percent more than the models selling the clothes. There is a huge industry built up around selling women ways to get their bodies closer to the fantasy ideal. Pills, diets, surgery, workout programs. . . . The message is ‘You don't look right. If you buy our product, you can get there.’”

A few things come to mind; his Emmy-nominated performance in A Woman Called Golda, his one-man playVincent, which was about Van Gogh, and an awesome TV-movie he did called Never Forget, a true story about a Holocaust survivor who took on a group of Holocaust-deniers in court and helped establish the Holocaust as historical fact.

I watched Never Forget one Saturday afternoon years ago, only because I was flipping channels and noticed Nimoy was in it. Very good movie, as it turned out.

Who could forget his tour de force performance as
Martian invader Narab in Republic's "Zombies of the Stratosphere" (1952).

I was going to post this, but I held out until I read through the whole thread.
I forget now, but I think the audio dub of this in J-Men Forever makes a comment
about it being Nimoy.

The article says several times that Nimoy is retiring , but he seems to be talking about the Spock role, specifically.

He was also the narrator in the Civilization IV game.

I was wondering when somebody would mention that one. Gave him a warm-up for playing an alien in the 1960s.

At 79 I think he's earned the right to retire.

Let's not forget his turn as Galvatron in Transformers: The Movie (1986).

(Also, I read somewhere that Orson Welles, who voiced Unicron, died before production was complete, so Nimoy finished the remaining Unicron dialogue -- don't know if that's actually true or not.)

Good movie. His rant to his kids about "hunger" simplified the survivor mindset for me.
