Iggy and the Stooges to Release Massive Raw Power Reissue Box Set
Unreleased tracks spread over three CDs, plus all sorts of other stuff

Previously unreleased Iggy and the Stooges tracks: They still exist! The punk rock forefathers' catalog has been mined incessantly in the past 40 years or so, but a new reissue of watershed 1973 album Raw Power will unearth a few more tracks that still haven't seen commercial release, if you can believe it.

On April 13, Columbia/Legacy will release Raw Power: Legacy Edition. Two weeks later, on April 27, they'll follow it up with the even more deluxe Deluxe Edition.

The Legacy Edition will include a remastered version of the original album, featuring David Bowie's original mix, on its first disc. The second disc, titled "Georgia Peaches", includes a complete recording of an Atlanta live show from 1973, parts of which have been heavily bootlegged -- with two previously unreleased bonus tracks to boot: the studio outtake "Doojiman" and a studio rehearsal performance of "Head On". It'll also include a 24-page booklet with essays about the band and introductions from surviving members.

All that stuff will also show up in the Deluxe Edition. Both discs will share space with a third disc, "Rarities, Outtakes, & Alternates From the Raw Power Era", which will include eight tracks from different sources (five of them previously unreleased). The fourth disc is a 30-minute documentary DVD called The Making of Raw Power.

And yeah, there's more. You'll also get a reproduction of a rare Japanese picture sleeve 7" single of "Raw Power" and "Search and Destroy", five 5x7 photo prints, and a 7" softcover booklet with an essay by Henry Rollins and testimonials from prominent folks like Lou Reed, Joan Jett, Tom Morello, and others. Before the April 27 release date, the box will be available exclusively through the Stooges' website. Stooges nerds, start saving your money.

This is a MUST HAVE for me.I still have the vinyl and original CD release with the Bowie mix as well as the new mix released a few years ago.A classic album for sure. Now if they would only do the same for "Kill City".The 2 CD releases that I have must have been mastered from a needledrop or cassette. They sound muddy and there is a bump in the audio on "Consolation Prizes" that is in the same place as the warp on my Neon Green vinyl LP. Now that Iggy and James Williamson are working together again, maybe Williamson will pull out the Master tape and release a definitive version. It should sound pretty awesome considering Williamson is an audio expert.

Seems to me the Deluxe Edition is the way to go. I only own the remaster and had originally intended to seek out an earlier CD edition, but that may not be necessary now. I wonder if the first CD edition will drop in price now.

Look at how the CDs are packaged. Does this alarm/bother/pissoff anyone else?

That does suck. Almost makes me sorry I sprang for the box. The regular 2-CD version may be the way to go for saner purchasers.

I got a promo of the 2-CD version today at 'Rama. Which is not to say that I won't buy the super-deluxe set if it shows up there down the line.

They threw in a promo-only "One Hour Radio Special" CD, one of those interview discs featuring the Stooges (& other musicians) talking about the album's "creation and influence."

Can anyone tell me more about "the original Bowie mix" of the album. Does Bowie contribute to the music. Was the album originally released with the Bowie mix? Thanks Jay

Yes -- Iggy & the Stooges originally recorded the album for Bowie's label, MainMan, in 1972, but the label didn't like what they heard. Label specified that Bowie himself needed to remix the album (on the heels of Bowie/Ronson producing Lou Reed's TRANSFORMER and the Mott's ALL THE YOUNG DUDES). Bowie spent a day remixing the record (w/o Ronson) and the results were pretty controversial, esp. the washed-out mixes of some of the louder material (e.g. the title track, "Search and Destroy", "Death Trip"). Depending who you believe, the washed-out sound was the result of Bowie's haste and/or experimentalism or Iggy's inexperience in the studio.

Bowie does not play or sing on RAW POWER.

Anyway, the Bowie mix was *the* mix released in 1973 and (originally) re-released on CD in the CD era. (Some lo-fi pre-Bowie mixes circulate on CD, however, like the ROUGH POWER CD released in the mid-90s).

In 1997, Iggy remixed the entire album, and this is the version currently in-print on CD. The Bowie mix is out-of-print on CD. The 1997 remix changed the sound of some tracks dramatically and (controversially) added digital distortion to the mix. He also used some different elements from the original mix in his mix, I believe.

To my ears, the 1997 remix was a lost opportunity -- too harsh to enjoy.I still prefer the original and look forward to this deluxe issue.

I picked-up the 2CD Legacy edition last night. I considered the 3CD edition, but remembered how rarely I listen to the bonus material on the (very nice) expanded editions of the first two albums and figured I could live without a few outtakes.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the discs yet, but the booklet, photos, etc. are pretty nice.

Question: I've always avoided those post-RAW POWER semi-legit CDs filled with studio cuts, rehearsals, lo-fi live tracks, etc. But with my appetite whetted by the new reissue, I'm wondering: Are any of these collections any good? By "any good", I mean: decent songs/performances in decent fidelity? Any nominations?

Thanks.

I bought the last remaster a few years ago. Does this one sound any better? Doubt you can really make this material sound any better since its supposed to be raw power. I really don't need that bonus stuff ( I to rarely listen to bonus material), give me the proper album.

To my ears, sounds almost identical to my 1990 CD, just a little bit louder.
