On the blog on his official website, Gary Louris (of The Jayhawks and Golden Smog) added this note:

...there is new rumbling about re releasing all the old Jayhawks major label records with bonus tracks on Columbia/Legacy (they are all out of print) and the first Jayhawks record on Lost Highway....but don't hold your breath!!

Fingers crossed, and if it happens, here's to hoping that they're physical CD releases and not digital only.

Linda adds — Lost Highway's CD reissue of the first Jayhawks album has been confirmed for May 18, 2010:

Product Description
The self-titled debut album from the highly-acclaimed, alt-country pioneers The Jayhawks will be released on May 18th by Lost Highway. The Jayhawks (often referred to by fans as The Bunkhouse Album) was originally released in 1986 on Bunkhouse Records, as a limited vinyl pressing. Fans not fortunate enough to own a copy of The Jayhawks will be happy to know that it will finally be available on CD, MP3 and again on vinyl for the first time in nearly 25 years.

The Jayhawks reissue will include an eight-page booklet with new photos from the recording period and a new essay by Jayhawks co-founder Mark Olson about album producer and then band manager Charlie Pine. The tracks are the original thirteen songs that appeared on the album, including "Falling Star", which recently resurfaced on Music From The North Country: The Jayhawks Anthology in 2009.

The 1986 incarnation of The Jayhawks featured Mark Olson (vocals/guitar), Gary Louris (lead guitar/vocals), Marc Perlman (bass) and Norm Rogers (drums). After listening to The Jayhawks, it is clear why the band became a catalyst in the evolution of what would eventually be coined alt-country. The album has more in common with Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers than it does with later Jayhawks classics Tomorrow The Green Grass and Hollywood Town Hall. It's quite evident where those milestone albums grew out of.

1. Falling Star
2. Tried And True
3. Let The Critics Wonder
4. Let The Last Night Be The Longest (Lonesome Memory)
5. Behind Bars
6. Cherry Pie
7. The Liquor Store Came First
8. People In This Place On Every Side
9. Misery Tavern
10. (I'm Not In) Prison
11. King Of Kings
12. Good Long Time
13. Six Pack On The Dashboard

Louris still hopes the debut and shelved live CD will see the light of day. I want those before we start talking reissues.

I sent an e-mail to an inquiry address for Legacy (talktous@legacyrecordings.com) regarding The Jayhawks reissues, and got this response from them:

Quote:
Due to our new deal with American Recordings, I believe we will be taking a look at these for this year.

They were incredibly quick in responding, like in a matter of hours. Much better than dealings I've had with Rhino. If we get these, hopefully, we'll see that live and first album, too (not to be too greedy). Hopefully, the fact that Rick Rubin is running Sony should play in The Jayhawks' favor.

:yay:

Gary Louris' blog on his website provides a little more detail -- very promising: [I'm] also trying to finish up compiling everything for the re-issues of all the Jayhawks records (HTH on, that is) and working on the Best Of and the purported boxset of rarities and DVD footage. Very cool if it pans out.

Yes, Thanks for the posting. Having all the Jayhawks releases I'll purchase any releases that may come our way this year.

The reissue is finally going to happen on May 18th, Renny. I've added pre-order details to the first post.

I picked this up at J&R. It's very country. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
