I have all the issues and the trade, but I may trade up since I have liked the look of most of these newer collections.

If the solicitation is correct, the Hardcover includes the Alpha Flight story from AVENGERS #272, which was left out of the Trade paperback colection.

I recently re-read most of your run and was reminded of your rather sudden departure in light of the events leading up to issue 300. Would you care to elaborate on what particular parts of the team's dismanteling you disagreed with? If not, no big deal but I thought I'd ask since you are on here regularly.

And, by the way, I was a subscriber for all of your 5 year run and those comics are a huge part of my memories of my youth and I would like to thank you for them.

Basically, it was editorially suggested that I should have Captain Marvel (who had recently become the leader of the Avengers) screw up badly, so that Captain America could come, save the day, assume leadership, and (somehow) bolster the sales of his own title. In a memo, I pointed out that this would come across as both racist and sexist, and that we should seriously rethink the idea.

Then I was fired via a message left on my answering machine, and no one in the office would return my calls.

Did you jump over to DC pretty soon after that?

Yeah, after a couple of months of trying to get assignments from other Marvel editors -- none of them returned my calls -- I exercised the escape clause in my contract* and started writing Superman stories for Mike Carlin at DC.

*Interesting thing about that contract: It turns out that it obligated me to turn in a certain amount of work every month, but it didn't require Marvel to give me the assignments necessary to produce that work.
