OH. MY. GOLLY this is cool.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/ram/nb/teaser_16x9_nb.ram

Best of all, it looks like they're using the classic 1966-80 theme tune.

"I'm the Doctor, by the way. What's your name?"
"Rose."
"Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!"

Not a trace. We now get the BBC on cable but they never seem to screen certain shows, so no Doctor Who, no Monty Pythons, no Prisoner (another show absent in Portuguese television - during my lifetime, anyway). Well… better some Beeb than none at all.

No word on an American broadcaster, The rumor is either BBCA or SciFi.

Living in Seattle Iike I do, I'll be watching it on CBC (Canada's the only country to have a deal in place so far), which we get on our basic ($8/mo) cable system.

I remember this show as a kid....it was always cool and freaky...remember K-9 the robot dog?

This new series looks cool...Bryan Hitch has done some production design for the Tardis....should look nice.

Hank - Thanks for the heads up about the CBC...now I know where to catch it..!

When does it start airing??

BBC's supposed to start airing it in March. CBC hasn't said if they'll be allowed to simulcast, or have to wait.

There's a section on the CBC deal at Outpost Gallifrey's FAQ:
http://www.gallifreyone.com/newseriesfaq.php

Quote:
Will the new TV series be shown in the US? North America? Elsewhere?

A press release confirmed that an agreement has been signed with the CBC network in Canada to broadcast the new series. "BBC Worldwide today concluded its first major pre-sale for the new Doctor Who series with Canadian public broadcaster, CBC Television," says the press release. Producer Russell T Davies notes that "Doctor Who has a remarkable 'fandom' but equally it’s the new audience that I care about. Someone who has never heard of a TARDIS or a Dalek, whether in Toronto or Swansea, will be able to start with this new series, climb on board with Christopher and Billie, and travel the whole of time and space." Slawko Klymkiw, executive programming director of CBC Television, is quoted as saying, "This was an exciting opportunity for CBC to bring the popular Doctor Who to fans - new and old alike - across the country. We are pleased to be working closely with BBC to bring Canadians this exceptional new series," and Hilary Read, Chief Operating Officer, BBC Worldwide Canada adds, "The CBC is the perfect partner for this fantastic new production. We're delighted to be bringing such a classic series to new audiences." There is no information about when the series will air on CBC, but it will likely be sometime relatively soon after the new series is broadcast in the UK.

Cripes. Johnston's here. Everybody be quiet before he reports something!

Outpost Gallifrey reports today that New Zealand's Prime TV network has completed a deal to show the new series "In the first quarter of 2005."

Since the BBC is planning a March launch, if it's not simulcast, it will be delayed by no more than a couple of weeks behind the UK showings.

So that leaves Australia and the US as the last big English-speaking countries without distro deals.

I found some DVD's of very old Dr Who (ie William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton)
episodes at the local charity shop and I was amazed at how slowly the action was paced, even the theme music was languid.
The incidental music was reminiscent of avante garde 60's theatre - all sort of atonal and plinky plonky and the whole thing had a strange dreamlike quality.
I also noticed that one of the companions was a Scotsman in a kilt
Whey hey!

Jo, most of the incidental music was done by the late Delia Derbyshire, who i think was a woman after your own heart . . .

I watched these series expecting them to be shit - but they aren't, they're totally great. A roaring success in the UK, I thoroughly recommend them.

Wow!
Thanks for the link Gerry.

Typical that all the credit went to Ron Grainer!
