My thoughts exactly! As far as I'm concerned, this guy was the beginning of the end of my DC comics buying habit.

I’m proud of the story and stand by it. I'm happy it upset people because it means that the story had some weight and emotion.

"Emotional resonance" is DC's current talking point. It probably came out of one of their event-by-committee meetings ... DiDio used the term first, then the writers started peppering their interviews with it. The above quote probably counts as the same.

Emotional resonance appears to mean anything that disturbs or upsets the reader in the sense of "that shouldn't happen in a comic book". IOW: dismemberment, rape, things like that. Costume changes, wrong personalities and inappropriate surroundings are just so '90s ... they don't resonate deeply enough ... but pulling off characters' arms really works. :)

Sort of like how filling a story with adolescent locker-room language and sex talk makes it "mature", huh?

A positive quote for a change...

Quote:
Jonathan Hickman: Again, we've touched on this before, but specifically on the FF, I thought the issues of the X-men (which is what I grew up reading) that really mattered back in the day were the one-offs: Kitty's fairy tales, a Day in the Life. I thought something like that was pivotal for the series. Characters in a moment. We don't do that enough anymore... so I decided to.

Darwyn Cooke on the state of comics when he was breaking in...

Quote:
Darwyn Cooke: Image had taken over and storytelling had been left on the side of the street with a condom in its ass.

Terry Moore on writing for the Big Two:

Quote:
Writing other people's characters is like being the 3rd husband: there may be some romance there but the kids never trust you.

Terry Moore chats briefly about Strangers in Paradise, Echo, and the comics industry:

Quote:
Terry Moore: "When I got in (the comic book industry in) 1993, it had no resemblance to the way it is now — none. Nothing about the business was the same: the fans, the way it works, what kind of comics came out, how they came out, how big and how much money was in the business. Now, I feel like we’re watching the death of an industry in terms of evolution, like we’re switching from being one way to a new way, you know? When you do that, you have to burn the bird and get the phoenix out of it. So I feel like we’re transitioning from the Industrial Age to the Space Age. It’s like everybody is lamenting the loss of the railroad, but hey man, now we have airplanes.”
