FYI - Dionne Warwick's 1980 Arista album, NO NIGHT SO LONG, is finally getting a wide CD release (a previous Japanese pressing quickly became a rarity) according to Amazon UK. They show a March 29 release date on David Nathan's soulmusic.com label. It looks like the disc will be an expanded edition, too, with three bonus tracks. Now if only Nathan could get the expanded editions of her Scepter & Warner albums out that he originally produced for Rhino Handmade before they shelved them! 1. Easy Love 2. No Night So Long 3. It's The Falling In Love 4. When The World Runs Out Of Love 5. We Never Said Goodbye 6. How You Once Loved Me 7. Reaching For The Sky 8. Sweetie Pie 9. Somebody's Angel 10. We Had This Time 11. Dedicate This Heart 12. This Time Is Ours 13. Only Heaven Can Wait Amazon USA:http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0039L1JHA/?tag=imwan-20Amazon UK:http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0039L1JHA/?tag=imwan-21

I got this yesterday. It sure is great to hear this album again, though the overall package is rather disappointing. I sure wish Reel Music had released this: the liner notes would have been more in-depth, and all of the original packaging would have been left intact. Sigh... I guess it's marginally better than not having it on CD at all...

Incidentally, the liner notes don't mention if the bonus tracks were included for this album or not, though they DO mention three others from the sessions that they were not able to license for this reissue.

I've been listening to this disc for a week or so now...while I understand pgh's concerns about the packaging, it should be made clear that this isn't a bare-bones release like we might see from a Wounded Bird or a Friday Music (much as we love those companies' work). It's a cut above that level. The booklet is well-designed and David Nathan's essay is three pages long with new quotes from Dionne. It's generally informative if not incredibly detailed. Not quite Reel or Ace-length liner notes, but welcome all the same! I do share pgh's wish, though, that David had been more specific about the genesis of the bonus tracks, even if based on producer Steve Buckingham's involvement, I'd guess at least 2 out of the 3 are from the NO NIGHT sessions. I do wonder why the remaining three tracks couldn't be licensed, though...
Anyway, glad to have NO NIGHT on CD. The disc sounds fine, and Dionne is in top form!

JMarch -- You are right that the CD is much better than something released by Wounded Bird. I guess I have gotten spoiled by the excellent work Reel Music does, so that anything less than that is a disappointment! You are also correct that the disc sounds fine, and Dionne is in excellent voice. I am looking forward to the Superbird release of "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye/Friends in Love" in April, though I am not familiar with any releases on that label.

I'd almost forgotten about the upcoming Superbird reissue; thanks for the reminder! I have the recent Guess Who 3-disc set from the Superbird/Ironbird/T-Bird (new) family of labels. They're part of Cherry Red, but I can't quite figure out their focus. The Guess Who package is a great bargain for three CDs (CANNED WHEAT, WHEATFIELD SOUL, SHARE THE LAND) and the bonus tracks from the last RCA releases of CANNED & SHARE are intact. There is a booklet with notes and credits, but it's very light on details. Still, I was glad to pick it up, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if the Dionne set is any different...I'm just thrilled that more of Dionne's 1980s output will be coming to light. It's just too bad that one label didn't pick up the entire catalog and remaster/expand it chronologically. Ah well...

Reel Music is first class and if you go to their site and email them Paul Williams will respond to you very quickly. I've been on him to reissue The Undisputed Truth's first album, which is unavailable on cd anywhere, and he shot me down at first but recently has given me a ray of hope that they may yet do it. He also told me they are looking to branch out into some funk reissues as well and looking at perhaps doing some mini-lp replica releases, sans booklets. I invite everybody on here who is a fan of classic soul to email him with your suggestions for releases, he will always respond back to you.
