I don't know why the album is always savaged in reviews. I think it's a great album, maybe Wings' best. This incarnation of the band never had a chance to blossom, either. (Tug Of War should have been a Wings album, then it might not have been such a wuss-fest.)

Robert Christgau's memorable review (not that I agree):

Back to the Egg [Columbia, 1979]
Whew. Sixteen titles on an untimed LP that must run forty minutes if not fifty--or seventy-five. When he's on, Paulie's abundant tunefulness passes for generosity. Here he's just hoping something will stick. C

I think it's a great album, quirky like The Beach Boys' Love You album. It does have a cult following and I think I've read positive reviews of it. McCartney himself is quite fond of it and has said that young people come up to him and mention it as their favorite Wings album. For me that would be "Band on the run", which I think is better than anything Lennon did solo.

"Getting Closer" is in my top 5 post-Beatles McCartney songs.

My favorite Wings album is Venus & Mars but Back To The Egg is a great one too, way better than Speed of Sound IMHO. "Old Siam Sir" is one of Paul's best rockers and anyone who doesn't like "Rockestra Theme" is just taking life too seriously.

I can remember first seeing the "Getting Closer" video on the Jerry Lewis Telethon back in 1979.
