Danger Mouse and The Shins frontman James Mercer have announced that they have formed a new band together.

The duo (pictured) are calling themselves Broken Bells, although the name could be changed, reports Pitchfork. They have launched a website, http://www.brokenbells.com, but are yet to release any material online.

The band will release their debut album in early 2010 and are apparently already working on the follow-up.

Mercer and Danger Mouse, real name Brian Burton, have already collaborated previously.

Mercer appeared on 'Dark Night of the Soul', the joint project of Burton and Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous that also featured a host of guest singers including The Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Iggy Pop and Frank Black.

Danger Mouse is also one-half of Gnarls Barkley and has also produced material for Gorillaz, The Black Keys and The Good, The Bad & The Queen among others.

Danger Mouse/Shins new band Broken Bells give away new song
Duo preview forthcoming album with free download

December 21, 2009

Danger Mouse and The Shins' James Mercer's new band Broken Bells have made a song from their forthcoming album available as a free download.

The pair have put 'The High Road', set to feature on their self-titled album (out March 8), up on http://www.brokenbells.com for 24 hours from today (December 21).

Speaking of recording the album, Danger Mouse told NME.COM: "It was very easy. We didn’t put any pressure on ourselves so there was nothing we trying to achieve or could fall short of, and we work together really, really well. We did it all together, it was all in the same studio, with couple of great engineers."

James Mercer: 'Broken Bells started because The Shins got too heavy'
Shins mainman and Danger Mouse reveal new project inspiration

January 19, 2010

Broken Bells – aka Danger Mouse and The Shins' James Mercer – have revealed that they formed a band together because life in The Shins became "heavy" for the singer.

Mercer told NME.COM in a video interview (which you can watch on the right) that he had considered releasing a solo album before he hooked up with DJ/producer Danger Mouse, real name Brian Burton.

The pair are set to release their debut self-titled album on March 8.

"As things started to wind down for me I wanted to try something totally different," Mercer explained. "It'd had started to feel heavy [in The Shins]. I didn't know what I wanted to do, maybe a solo thing or a new band. And Brian happened to be having the same kind of ideas."

Burton added: "I didn't want to produce other records anymore. I thought it'd be great to try something with James. We just started working on it as a band."

This is being streamed in full on NPR until day of release. Excellent album, way better than I expected. Experimental in the arrangements, influences from Beach Boys/Van Dyke Parks to scratchy punk guitar, strings, but never forgetting that these are pop songs. Danger Mouse was a great choice, he manages to break Mercer out of the box he was in arrangement-wise.
