For me, there are two paintings that sum up epic fantasy in my mind and they're both my Frazetta--   Along with Frazetta's Conan & Mars covers, Bama's Doc Savage and Adams' Tarzan covers pretty muh make up the Holy Trinity of fantasy imagery...   What are your favorites?

Frazetta
Neal Adams on Tarzan
Early Boris (before he became so stiff)
Michael Whelan's John Carter and Elric covers
Earl Norem/James Bama in a tie for 5th (because I couldn't decide between the two)
Honorable mention - Joe Jusko.

I don't know; I like the ones whose art depicts a world that I would love to explore or read more about. The iconic style posed shots used for most covers by Boris or Frazetta, while usually excellent art, all seem fairly homogeneous to me. That second Syd Mead image above is kind of what I'm talking about. I want to go there.

Ultimately, I like combinations of both -- a neat-looking character in a world I'd like to explore? That shit's gold, that is. It's one of the reasons why Michael Whelan is one of my absolute favorites. Same with Jim Burns.

Well it has to be more than just a landscape.  It needs to have interesting looking people and things in it too. I just mean character poses that don't tell me much of anything other than "here is a shirtless man with a sword" don't do as much for me as scenes that tell a story, or show me a new world.
