Coldplay to rush-release new album?
Band apparently already recorded follow up to 'Viva La Vida'

August 21, 2008
http://www.nme.com/news/coldplay/39117

Coldplay are reportedly set to release a new album in 2009 - despite the fact that the band's last record, 'Viva La Vida Or Death And all His Friends', was only released in June.

A report in The Sun (August 21) suggests that the band's 'Viva La Vida..' sessions with producer Brian Eno had been so successful that they were now looking to rush-release a new album of already recorded material.

A source at the band's label EMI said: "The 'Viva La Vida...' sessions were incredibly fruitful. They gelled brilliantly with Brian and recorded much more music than they could fit on one album.

"The majority of the follow-up is already in the can, though they will have to go back into the studio at some point to add a few more songs."

Frontman Chris Martin previously revealed that the band had recorded a song with Kylie Minogue, titled 'Luna', which didn’t make it onto 'Viva La Vida...', saying that the song "will be on a record we will put out in 2009".

However a spokesperson for EMI denied reports the move would let the band out of their record deal with the label, telling NME.COM: "Contrary to inaccurate reports in The Sun, Coldplay are signed to a long-term record deal with EMI and are committed to produce a number of albums. The band's relationship with EMI is both long-term and positive."

Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and Radiohead have all recently left EMI. The label was taken over by private equity firm Terra Firma in 2007.

"Rush-release"? Remember when acts would release 2 or even 3 new albums in a calendar year?

Agreed. It's kind of sad to me that this sort of thing would be considered a rush.

It was good being a KISS fan circa 1977-1979. Hell, I yearn for the days of even just 1 new album per year from my favorite artists. Those were the days, my friends. :sigh:

When Aerosmith took three years between the release of Night In The Ruts and Rock In A Hard Place, I assumed they broke up and when I saw Hard Place at the record store, I was floored!

So not really a full album, nor is it really turning around a new recording quickly ... but still, kudos to a major band putting out a release so soon after a long-awaited album. I'd like to see more of this. (I'd also like to see more bands pluck unreleased tracks from their sessions and release them as EPs.)

Wanted to add that I had read that "Lost+" is a version of the song with Jay-Z on it... should be interesting.

Coldplay reveal 'story' concept for new album
Chris Martin wants follow-up to 'Viva La Vida' to have 'less fanfare'

June 5, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/coldplay/45128

Coldplay's Chris Martin has said the band's next record will be a concept album revolving around a secret story.

The frontman revealed that the band want to take a break from touring to work on the follow-up to 'Viva La Vida', which he says will be more stripped-down than its predecessor.

"We spend an awful lot of time creating," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Maybe it's because we're about to turn 33, but I just feel hungry to write all the time.

"I think at the end of this tour, we may not tour for a while. We may put out a record without quite so much fanfare. I think the next one will be quite stripped-down and based upon this story idea which I can't talk about because it might be bad."

Martin added that he's been getting inspiration from TV show 'The Wire', saying: "The main thing I do on tour is write, and then go watch ."

He also denied rumours that he'll release a solo album, saying: "Hell would have to not only freeze over, but be skated over and completely closed up. The pope would have to declare that it didn't even exist. I can't think of anything worse."

Coldplay to release new album this year
Chris Martin says he wants the new album out this winter

February 22, 2010

Coldplay will release a new album in 2010, according to Chris Martin.

The band are currently at work in their own studio, thought to be a converted church, in London. Speaking in a video interview with Globo.com - which you can watch by clicking below - Martin said he wants to release the album "hopefully this Christmas". He added that the band are being extra security-conscious to make sure their new material doesn't leak online.

"There's only two people in the whole building who know how to open all the recording files," Martin explained. "Even we [Coldplay] don't know how to do it. We couldn't even steal our own music at the moment. You would have to be a computer genius and a great burglar to get into the building, and download it, and mix it."

The band also denied that the album would be their last for label EMI. "I think we have about 500 more," Martin initially joked, before adding: "No, seriously, we signed for a lot."

The album will be Coldplay's first since 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends'.

Brian Eno confirms he's working on new Coldplay album
Band in the studio starting their fifth release

February 26, 2010

Brian Eno has confirmed that he is working with Coldplay again as they gear up to start recording their fifth album.

Earlier this month frontman Chris Martin said he wanted to get the band's next album out by Christmas, and Eno has confirmed he will be involved again.

The former Roxy Music man produced the band's last album, 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends', and told BBC 6 Music that he would again force the band's frontman to work separately from his bandmates as he did on that record.

"It's not rocket science, and it’s not Svengali-ism either," he suggested. "It's not some attempt to subvert the band, but just to see what other possibilities are lurking within them that might not come out within their normal working situations."

Speaking about the new material, he added: "It's quite different from anything they've done before, I think, so far anyway. I don't know how it will end up being, but it's very fresh."

Chris Martin: 'Coldplay's new record is a concept album'
'It's about two people who are a bit lost,' says frontman

December 13, 2010
http://www.nme.com/news/coldplay/54232

Image

Coldplay's Chris Martin has revealed that the band's forthcoming new record is a "concept album".

Although he is yet to reveal the album's title or release date, Martin confirmed that it is "a concept album but it's supposed to be very personal within a big framework".

Speaking about the concept, Martin told BBC News: "It's from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost."

He added: "Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together."

The band have been working with Brian Eno and producer Marcus Dravs on sessions for the follow-up to 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends', with Martin saying they "spent a year making a lot of noise".

Chris Martin: 'Coldplay's new album is about OCD and addiction'

Coldplay's Chris Martin has revealed the band's new album will be about "love, addiction [and] OCD".

Speaking to Radio 1, the frontman explained that the album, the band's fifth, will be inspired by "working for someone you don't like".

However, Martin appeared to contradict comments he made to BBC News about the album last month by denying that the band are working on a "concept album".

Discussing the album in December, he stated: "It's a concept album but it's supposed to be very personal within a big framework".

However, he has now claimed it will instead be a "thinly veiled account of what happens within the group".

"It's supposed to be about life, the good stuff and the bad stuff. Everything," Martin said.

The band have spent the past year working with Brian Eno and producer Marcus Dravs on sessions for the follow-up to 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends'.

Coldplay: 'We're still trying to deliver our album masterpiece'

Coldplay's Chris Martin has told NME that the band are striving to write their "masterpiece" with the follow-up to 2008's 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends'.

The frontman, speaking in the new issue of NME, on UK newsstands today (January 12), or available digitally, spoke about new songs including 'Princess Of China' and 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall', before admitting that he thinks the band can better their previous albums with the new effort.

"We still don't think we've delivered our masterpiece, so we're still trying to do it," Martin said. "As long as we feel like that and we're hungry… that's all that matters."

The band have again been working with Brian Eno and Marcus Dravs on the album.

"We were with Brian Eno for a long period just messing around," the singer said. "Now we're with Marcus, trying to turn that into something cohesive and under seven hours long. The worst mistake we could make, when we're the most Marmite-y of bands, would be to make a super-long thing".

Coldplay hinting at new song titles with cryptic tweets?

Coldplay have published three cryptic tweets on their official Twitter account, Twitter.com/coldplay, which may give hints about the title of their new single or album.

One tweet links to a moving image that spells out the message: "Maybe the trees are gone". Another spells, "Maybe the streets alight" while a third one reads, "I feel my heart start beating to my favourite song". The first two messages are written in flashing text with the other written in a brightly coloured font.

A similar message was posted yesterday which reads: "I turn the music up, I got my records on, I shut the world outside until the lights come on."

No details have been posted as to what the messages mean or if they are an indication of a future announcement - although fans are speculating that they could point to names for new songs or the band's next album.

Coldplay have been recording their new album with Brian Eno over the last few months and last year, but have given few details about how it will sound or how it differs from their previous efforts. The band are booked for a series of UK festivals this summer, including headline slots at T In The Park and Glastonbury.

New single out this week

Dear friends

We're about to play a bunch of summer festivals so it's as good a time as any to put out a new song.

'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' will be available digitally on Friday 3rd June at 12pm (BST), except in the UK where it'll come out on the stroke of midnight between Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June.

We'll also stream it here on Friday and give it a run out at Rock Im Park.

Love Will
