A girl I liked in high school made me an eclectic mix tape. I remember a few of the tracks on it. Once in awhile I hear a song on the radio and remember that it was one of the songs on the tape.
Jaws Theme Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill Oh L'Amour - Erasure
(She was technically my first girlfriend, for two weeks. She started smoking pot and I broke up with her.)
Freshman year in college, a girl who was a friend of a girl I liked (and was real gothy and had a long-term BF already) played me Killing an Arab by The Cure in her room, because I was reading The Stranger by Albert Camus for English class and the song was based on the book.
Any particular songs of the past specifically trigger a girl (or guy) related memory?

you should've given her a bit longer. then you could've broke up with her when she got all strung out on heroin. sounds more romantic.

I once had a bipolar ex-girlfriend who wanted me to get rid of any CD that could in any way remind me of any previous girlfriend.
She liked Seal, Sting, Golden Earring, Billy Squier, and Yes, artists that all make me gag to this day.

One I love to tell on myself...
I was with one of my girlfriends, in her gameroom, making out rather seriously. We had the TV on in the background and Fridays came on (I loved Fridays - at that point in time, I thought it was better than SNL).
Anyway, we're, um, somewhat entangled, and the announcer says, "...and musical guest, Kiss!"
Things came to a screeching halt. She was not happy with me. I missed the performance of "I" that night because she told me to leave early.
She was not a fan of "The Elder", which I was listening to incessantly. I caught her singing along one time and said something like, "I thought you didn't like this." She said, "I don't, but it's all I've heard in your car for the last month."
We eventually broke up. I knew it was time because we went to a Three Stooges film festival and she didn't laugh once. We went back to her house and that was the end of that. Oh, and it was Valentine's Day. She gave me a gift. I didn't reciprocate (unless she viewed breaking up with me as a gift).

2 unpleasant ones come to my mind: (in order they occurred) 1. I had fallen head over heels in love and was on my way to her home to finally tell her, when I made the mistake of turning on the radio. Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" was on. It turned out to be an omen because I got to her house just in time to see her standing on her front lawn in a deep embrace with a then-close friend of mine. I love the song but think of that day when I hear it.
2. "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground" by Willie Nelson. About 8 years ago I entered a very serious relationship and she turned out to be the love of my life. At the time, I wasn't aware of all the problems she had and she didn't want to pass them off on me. Anyway, as time went on I became a source of strength for her. She had spent several years believing her problems could never be solved and that if she allowed anyone to get too close to her they would only hurt her or be so intimidated of her problems that they would back away. I made up my mind that I was going to fix everything and make her and her daughter happy and eventually make a nice life for us all. It took a couple of years and lots of turmoil but we finally turned the corner and I had never seen her so purely happy. We set a date for a November wedding in 2004 and just a few days after we set the date, she and her daughter were killed in a car accident. That particular song is exactly how I feel about my relationship with her and I've probably only listened a couple of times since. Knowing that I made her and her daughter happy has helped me to continue to exist.

Sorry to bring up painful memories! It's funny how songs can trigger so much.

oh it's ok. I debated on even mentioning that second one because I didn't want to be a downer on this good thread. I'll post a happy memory tomorrow!

Zane, I just started reading this thread, and found myself bemused by some of the associations, and your #1 hits on the same thread, and then #2. I don't see it as a "bummer"; but a testament to the quality of the man you must be. Painful, and one may dare to say unfair, you showed that one can help another change, if that one is selfless. To share your story is further quality.

A friend of mine was a big Counting Crows fan. His friend had a girlfriend named Anna so he would always quote "Anna Begins" to him and they'd have a laugh over it. When his friend and Anna broke up because of some other guy, he'd quote "Hey Jealousy" by Gin Blossoms instead (another favorite). His friend was no longer amused.
That was right around when REM's Monster came out. We all loved it.

Prince's Girls & Boys was so me & a HOT (but really messed up) Madonna look alike I briefly dated in the 80's. After she dumped me I associated her with the Suzanne Vega song The Queen And The Soldier.
Another short term 80's relationship with a hot young thing with a drug problem was best represented for me by Duncan Browne's Fallen Angel. I actually played her the song after we broke up, but she didn't get it.
And lastly, Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was my break up record with my last "true love" in the early 90's.

Aha! That was one of the other songs on the mix tape. "Possession" by Sarah McLachlan. Her old stuff was better.
