Couldn't find an existing thread about the upcoming Olympics. Less than a week left! Having gone through the schedule I've noticed a slight problem for me: On Sunday the 21st the Canada-USA hockey game starts at 1:40 my time, followed by Sweden-Finland at 6:00 on Monday morning... I'm considering trying to turn around my internal clock by basically staying awake as long as possible on Saturday, sleep all Sunday, get up at night, watch the games, go to work at Monday morning (although I'd still miss the end of the second match, will have to listen to the radio at work), and then go to bed as soon as I come home. And no, I don't have any particular idea on how I'd get my rythm back to normal. Stupid time zones!

I have to avoid the city I live in during the Olympics and watch as more and more of my tax dollar is made to foot the bill. Go Vancouver!

Was it my imagination, or did I hear a few boos when the Americans were introduced?

Your imagination.
Yeah, the Canadians hosting the games booed our American neighbours. Please.
Here's a hint: the people who sit in at the opening ceremonies do not boo anyone.
Now there are protesters outside who would probably boo if you want.

And did. I have so far been invited to two anti-Olympics events this weekend. Instead I will lay low, enjoy what I want since my taxes are funding it either way. If attention is drawn to some serious issues along the way of the Olympics, that is good too. But just protest for the sake of protest is silly.

That sound was a bunch of Americans standing at the border booing Canada. They weren't aware the Olympics were going on.

Now there are protesters outside who would probably boo if you want. You're right. The sound I thought was a boo was "OOOOHHHH". It was the IDENTICAL sound made in reaction to the slam poet, and I know the crowd wasn't booing. As an American, I sincerely wish that "please" and "thank you" could define my country. It should, but I know it doesn't. Please accept my apologies for my misinterpretation of that noise earlier.

Didn't know there was such a huge cultural difference between our two nations. I know it isn't, but that "OOOHHHH" sound to me sounds like booing!

I know how much this means to Canadians, but would it be impolite to criticize the PACING of these Opening Ceremonies?

Back to the pacing----I'm not upset at the initial caldron failure at B.C. Place---that might have happened in Chicago, too. But the organizers knew there had to be a SECOND caldron ignition as well. Did they have to have THIS many musical numbers? That being said, Canada will probably kick the U.S.'s butts for most of the Olympics. Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing the Caps' star Alexander Ovechkin Russia beat play the Penguins' star Sidney Crosby Canada in hockey.

As a hometown fan I was pretty thrilled - even if it is making the city a bit hellish for the next few weeks. The pacing was a bit slow but not unbearable. The worst pace was on the Canadian anthem and the stylizing of it. Not a good rendition at all. Bummer the last leg of the cauldron didn't come up.

Did RUSH appear? Any Geddy Lee sightings? He's very Canadian.

No such luck. Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado did a duet. Sarah McLachlan played piano and sang. Nikky Yanofsky butchered the national anthem (but she is the singer of the host broadcast's them so...) k.d. Lang did an awesome job of Hallelujah. So lots of Canadians just not of the RUSH variety.

I missed the opening ceremony but I figured that big gal known as KD Lang would be there. I DVRd the show so Il'll catch up tonight.
